This is one of my favorite quotes. When you add passion and dedication to your skills, it shows in your work. And your customers notice that. If they like your work, it’s only a matter of time before they refer you to their network. It has happened to me. And it can and will happen for you too.

When I started my own coaching and consulting practice during the 2008 recession, I wished I had something to make my path easier. Perhaps access to a proven guide or a framework. Or access to an expert whose experiences I could learn from. Unfortunately, that was not to be. I grew my business through ‘trial by fire’ and by learning from my own mistakes.

But that doesn’t have to be you.

During the 13th year of my business, I am happy to share with you the 2 free resources I developed to answer the many pressing questions you may have as a new coach or a consultant. I know I have shared these resources before. But I don’t mind sharing them again and again because I know, from the bottom of my heart, that they can provide value to people who have established, or are on the verge of establishing, a coaching and consulting practice of their own. Sign-up for them. Dm me or email me at [email protected] and let me know your questions.

Your business mantra is the statement that best epitomizes your vision for and belief in the business. It can be settling for you to say, as well as organizing and inspiring. I suggest you say it often as it can help in different ways along your journey. The right mantra at the right time feels like home.

Mine is Do great work; build goodwill.

What's yours?

We’ve all heard about (and sometimes been victim to) the dreaded Monday blues. Here are some sureshot ways to combat the blues, and make your Monday, and the rest of your week, happy and productive.

Start softly and quietly
Allow yourself to wake up slowly
Get some water and stretch a little
Get outside if you can
Stay productive
Figure out a schedule that you can easily stay with
Jump in the shower early in the day
Get dressed (sweats are good, pants are better)
Eat well
Engage with what makes you happy and at peace

As Michael Ealy says, remember that Monday is also a new day and a new week, full of opportunities for something special to happen.

What’s your way of combating the Monday Blues?

Today’s tip comes to us from a participant in the first cohort of my program - Leadership Landing for Trailblazers. It’s a program I created out of a genuine passion to help new and who have recently started, or are looking to start a business of their own. Joni is a seasoned healthcare executive of over 40 years. She held the positions of a CNO and a CEO before starting her own consulting practice as a nurse executive coach/mentor at Joni Tiller, LLC. Here is what Joni has to say.

The pace of change is fast today. But you have to be the student of the game. Especially if you want to sustain a solo business and not fade away. In all my years of building up a multi seven figure consultancy company, I never stopped learning. From books, blogs, courses, other coaches and consultants, my experiences, and even from my clients. If you want to constantly grow in your life and your business, you need to keep on learning.
✔ Always be and stay curious.
✔ Take great notes.
✔ Always be a student.
✔ Keep learning from your experiences.
✔ Don't be afraid to ask questions.
✔ And the most important fact of all - keep your mind open to new experiences and possibilities.

I encourage you to think about 3 things that support you to stay a student of the game. Share them in the comments below so that others can also benefit from your expertise.

I started Leadership Landing at the beginning of the Great Recession. I was cautioned by many, for obvious and sound reasons. Some flat out told me it was a mistake and I understood that too. Despite my concerns, I took a few deep breaths and went for it. I’m glad I did. Now in our 13th year of this amazing journey, we’re a multi-million dollar coaching and consulting firm with over 100 active clients at any given time.

Why do I say this?

Because, if you wait for the “perfect moment”, you may never start. Dive in and use the knowledge you currently have. Build on it. And see success become yours.

To help you start where you stand, I’ve created a free guide - “a roadmap to success”, that tells you about the basics of starting your own or business from the ground up. Sign up here: https://blog.leadershiplanding.com/roadmap and gain access to this guide full of advice and action steps.

After 13 years of increasing revenue and the bottom line for Leadership Landing, I decided to build out a program that would offer people what I could not find 13 years ago when I was just starting: A roadmap for success.

Leadership Landing for Trailblazers is just that- an 11 session, live - online program that lays out a roadmap and steps, on the journey to successfully build a coaching and consulting business of your own. There is a link to the program in the comments if you’re interested.

This is what Minette Norman Consulting, a transformational leadership consultant focused on inclusive workplaces, and a participant in the first cohort has to say about the program.

Having strong business values is great. Until they make you lose a client.
Your values define a lot of your business decisions. However, you need to realize that your clients values are in conflict with your values, you need to think long and hard about enforcing your values on that particular client. If you don’t want to end up losing your client, you need to figure out a compromise or a balance that works well for the both of you. This free interview talks about how I nearly lost a client because of enforcing my values too strongly on them. I also discuss the 5 best decisions and the 5 worst mistakes while growing my multi 7 figure leadership coaching and consulting company. If you are a startup leadership coach or consultant struggling to wrap your head around what it takes to grow a successful business, download this free interview now. https://blog.leadershiplanding.com/5-x-5-insights

It’s easier to start a business where you have contacts and experience. The best way to start a coaching or a consulting business is to go where your expertise already is. If you have worked for 5 years in the technology sector, start by nurturing or leveraging contacts and leads in that sector. Practice in a niche where people know you have experience in. The people you approach will think that you’ll be a better choice as a coach rather than someone not experienced in the technology sector at all. Get some momentum first. You can always change your niche later on.

When you are aware about your personality, your strengths and weaknesses, your likes and dislikes, you benefit in all areas of your life. Especially in your business. Only if you know yourself, you’ll know what you expect from yourself, how much of yourself are you willing to give to your business and your clients, how far are you willing to go for your clients. This also leads to good insights on what kind of people do you want to work with, what kind of person will you be comfortable coaching and consulting. What will be your boundaries. Once you have an idea of all these, and more, you will be well on your way to setting up a successful coaching and consulting business that you love.
