CLIENTS!!!!!!
Laminitis season is here! That lush green grass that you think your horse deserves to go spend all day on is not a great idea! It’s literally like feeding high amounts of first cut to your horse. It can send them into laminitis and that’s not good.
Limit the intake, exercise them regularly, make sure they have lots of water.
Signs of laminitis include but are not limited to….
1. Heat in the feet
2. Horse standing in water when normally does not.
3. Altered rest position (back end further then normal towards the front end)
4. Bounding digital pulses
5. Horse is “off feed”
6. Horse is uncooperative
7. Horse wants to lay down more then usual.
These are just some of the signs. Should you witness these you need to immediately notify me or your hoof care provider/veterinarian. Laminitis is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY! It’s not to be waited on. Should you feel as though your horse is showing signs you need to follow these steps.
1 . Notify your veterinarian
2. Notify farrier
3. Remove the feed or stimulant causing the issue
4. ICE ICE ICE. Get the feet cold immediately. Research shows the faster you can get that done the higher the chances of recovery.
5. Follow the vet’s recommendations as to going forward.
Please leave your horses in until this grass has a chance to burn off a bit, get mowed down, and your horses get an opportunity to condition themselves to spring/summer vegetation.
Laminitis can lead to founder which can lead to death. Please take it seriously.
Thank you.
