Many wells in northern Idaho are drilled into fractured rock aquifers. This pdf explains fractured rock aquifers and the challenges of drilling wells into them.

I've been working with the City of Spirit Lake on development of a ground water monitoring plan for the City's wastewater reuse site, located above the Rathdrum Prairie - Spokane Valley Aquifer, which is an EPA-designated sole-source aquifer and Idaho's only Sensitive Resource Aquifer. As such, wastewater reuse activities above the aquifer receive a lot of scrutiny.

The economic forces of construction and development that drive many North Idaho communities has come to a halt in Spirit Lake because of a basic public service: the sewers.

The bio-remediation pilot study at a former wood treatment site continues. I recently collected samples from two wells for DNA analysis to try to determine if bacteria capable of breaking down pentachlorophenol are present in the subsurface.

Continuing work on ground water monitoring and bio-remediation at a former wood treatment site. A shallow sump in an adjoining parking lot needed to be abandoned to make way for expansion at a local business. The sump, one of several at the site, was installed in the 1990's during early site investigations to collect free product and water samples. We also replaced a 1990's era 2" monitoring well with a 4" diamter well. The old well screen had become plugged over time with fine-grained silt and clay, making it difficult to pump water out of, or into the well. The new well will be used as both an injection well and monitoring well for a bio-remediation test plot.

Working on post bio-remediation injection ground water monitoring at a former wood treatment site. Nutrients and oxygen were injected into the shallow aquifer to assist naturally occurring bacteria that use the hydrocarbons as an energy source. The injections occurred in April. I sampled the site in March to get baseline data and am now following up with monitoring to measure the effects of the injections.

Monks Hydro-Geoscience conducted the preliminary analysis of this wastewater release. The Spokane Valley - Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer is an EPA Sole Source Aquifer and a IDEQ Special Resource Aquifer. Any significant release of potential contaminants above the aquifer requires a hydrogeologic analysis to determine what the impacts of the release on water quality will be and if public health is jeopardized. If you need hydrogeological consulting services, give me a call! If you don't, consider your self lucky!

A company hauling human waste from Spokane into Idaho as fertilizer has sparked a legal fight with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. Gobers Pumping and Repair, with business partner St. Isidore Farms, will have to prove that injecting 54,000 gallons of sewage from septic tanks and portable toilets into a 150...
