Alright, I decided on a math problem for this week.

With the information given you may use two possible formulas as follows:
(A2 X R bar) and (R bar / d2)

The (A2 X R bar) is a formula for 3 sigma of the averages. So if you use this formula and divide by 3 you will get an estimate of sigma of averages.

The formula (R bar / d2) is a formula for an estimate of standard deviations of single events. Whenever you use R bar to calculate standard deviation we call it an estimate of the standard deviation because it is not as accurate as if you would have used all the raw data to calculate standard deviation. Why? Because the calculation of range (R bar) only uses two numbers from a given sample the smallest and the largest. This makes it less accurate than if you would have used all the data in the sample.

Alright, now lets perform the calculations.

The constant A2 for a sample size of 5 = 0.577.
So, A2 X R bar = .577 X 2 = 1.154, however, A2 X R bar = 3 sigma so you must divide this answer by 3 to get the standard deviation of averages.

So, 1.154 / 3 = 0.3847. This is the correct answer for the Sigma of Averages.

The standard deviation of single event will be R bar / d2. d2 = 2.326 for a sample size of 5. So 2 / 2.326 = 0.8599.

Correct answer is: (0.3847, 0.8599), which is answer a).

Another bit of information that may help you get the correct answer is to remember that the standard deviation of averages will be less than the standard deviation of single events.

This is a tough question because all of the options include analytical people.
However, the correct answer and most analytical is Taguchi (answer b). Taguchi is also the one known as the father of quality engineering. Taguchi was very instrumental in bringing statistically designed experiments (DOE) into the quality engineering tool box.

A close second is Shewhart as he was known as the father of statistical quality control.
