Hi - I'm Lauren and I wanted to introduce myself!

I am the owner of FYRE Strategies 👋

A little bit about me: I am a licensed Maine attorney, political consultant and government affairs professional. My professional skills include political and crisis communication, legislative advocacy, comprehensive political campaign management, and grassroots organization.

I'm a lifelong Mainer and grew up in Waterville (Go Panthers!). After completing my bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences with a minor in Chemistry at Florida State University, I returned home to work on my dad's gubernatorial campaign. Shortly after his successful re-election bid, I went on to earn a law degree from the University of Maine and became a member of the Maine Bar in 2017.

Following law school, I joined a public affairs firm where I had the opportunity to work with a variety of clients performing various tasks including advocacy, grassroots organization, and statewide campaign management. After that, I went onto become a State Director for the National Rifle Association where I developed and implemented all government affairs and political strategies for Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

I live in Springvale, Maine with my husband and my two dogs (Bailey and Bullet). I also love to cook, read, workout and find new ways to incorporate self-care practices into my daily life!

Are you making these common mistakes while trying to advocate your issue with lawmakers?

The best thing you can do is to identify them and correct the course.

6 Mistakes to avoid while advocating:

1. Failing to do your research: before approaching a legislator, research the issue thoroughly. Understand the legislator's position on the issue, and their voting record on similar legislation. In addition, identify where the legislator is from - is there a specific reason they feel the way they do?

2. Overwhelming legislators with too much information: although well-intentioned, too much information iso overwhelming. Focus on the most important points. Be clear and concise.

3. Being too demanding: legislators are BUSY and your issue is not the only issue they are dealing with at any given time. They have competing priorities they are trying to navigate. Be respectful of their time and avoid making unreasonable demands.

4. Failing to build relationships: building relationships with legislators is the KEY to successful advocacy efforts. This takes time. Get to know them personally, get to know their staff members, and work to build a relationship built on mutual trust and respect.

5. Ignoring opposing viewpoints: you MUST acknowledge, understand and respond to opposing viewpoints, even if you do not agree with them. Correct any misstatement of facts in a clear and polite way. Failing to address critics will make it harder to build consensus and to achieve your goals.

6. Giving up too easily: Advocacy is a long-term process, and it's important to remain persistent in the face of setbacks. Legislative change can take years. Keep showing up, advocating for your cause, educating lawmakers, and working to build support over time.

Avoid these common mistakes and you will dramatically improve your chances of successfully advocating legislators on an issue.

Remember: stay focused, persistent and POLITE. Don't be afraid to seek out help and support from those who share your goals.
