Striding Towards Work-Life Fitness: My Journey with a Walking Pad and Electric Standing Desk
Welcome to my latest venture into work-life fitness, where I’ve decided to merge my office life with a touch of treadmill magic and the finest electric standing desk, TikTok’s recommendation for June 2024.
Learning to Walk and Think (Simultaneously, Sort of)
I know what you’re thinking: “Walking and working? Isn’t that a bit ambitious?” Yes, it is. Imagine trying to craft an email while your feet are moving at 3 mph. It’s like learning to walk and chew gum at the same time, only with the added challenge of also trying to solve the world’s problems (or at least, my inbox).
Turns out, performing higher math while my feet are moving fast is a no-go. My brain just cannot handle the complexities when my body thinks it's on a morning jog. So, I’ve had to slow it down. Literally. Walking at a more leisurely pace seems to be the sweet spot for maintaining some semblance of productivity without feeling like I’m about to trip over my own feet.
The Science Behind Slow-Moving Workdays
You might be wondering if there’s any real benefit to all this walking and working. Enter: science. A recent study conducted by the Mayo Clinic found that active workstations, which include treadmill desks, can significantly reduce sedentary time and enhance cognitive performance without negatively impacting job performance. The study involved 44 participants who used different types of workstations (sitting, standing, walking, and stepping) and showed that cognitive functions such as reasoning, short-term memory, and concentration improved or remained stable with the use of active workstations.
The study also noted that participants' fine motor skills, including typing speed, were slightly slower when using active workstations, but typing accuracy was not affected. This suggests that treadmill desks can be a beneficial addition to the workplace for reducing the risk of chronic diseases associated with sedentary behavior, like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, while maintaining productivity.
Moreover, another study highlighted that treadmill desks can help improve physical health outcomes, like reducing waist and hip circumference and promoting weight loss, particularly among overweight and obese office workers.

The TikTok Shop: Where It All Begins
Of course, none of this would be possible without my latest intrigue with the TikTok shop and all the cool gadgets and deals. It’s like having your very own fitness gadget paradise.
In conclusion, committing to work-life fitness has been a journey. There have been laughs, there have been stumbles (literally), and there have been moments of pure genius (usually when the treadmill is off). But in the end, it’s all about finding that balance and enjoying the ride—or in this case, the walk.
So, here’s to walking, working, and finding humor in the little things. And for my colleagues, just let me know if the dull drone of the walking pad is annoying during Teams meetings. If I suddenly disappear from the screen, you’ll know I’ve achieved flight mode—or fell off backwards. Just kidding, I have the kill switch plugged in. Or maybe not kidding, but seriously, I have the kill switch plugged in.
