This week, Iteris held its first Traffic Operations Academy as part of its ongoing internal workforce development program. The Operations Academy, a concentrated training program on traffic signal timing practices and strategies, provided six days of a classroom, laboratory, and practical applications environment for new Iteris traffic engineers from around the country. Topics included an introduction to traffic signals, data collection and staff safety, modeling and analysis, signal performance measures, traffic controllers and cabinets, and deployment and fine tuning. Training was held at the Iteris Tampa office's training facilities and ATMS test lab.

John Albeck, P.E. PTOE, Traffic Operations Program Manager for Iteris in their Omaha office, developed the program and served as the lead instructor, supported by Jeff Gerken, P.E., PTOE; Pete Yauch, P.E., PTOE, RSP2i, and Helmuth Arens, P.E., PTOE.

Congratulations to Pete Yauch for being named as the 2021 recipient of ITE's Burton W. Marsh Award For Distinguished Service, one of the organization’s top honors.

According to ITE executive director and CEO Jeff Paniati: "Pete’s engagement in ITE has been both significant and sustained. He continues to share his considerable knowledge and expertise with members on a regular basis and is a long-time leader in the Florida District. His many contributions to ITE have made us a stronger, more effective organization. He is certainly deserving of this honor.”

Congratulations to Iteris' Pete Yauch for being recognized in the ITE Journal's 2020 Awards and Professional Development issue for his contribution to the organization and wider transportation industry. Having been a proud ITE member for 45 years, Pete stepped in as District Administrator for the 920-member Florida Puerto Rico district in 2017.

Transportation enthusiast Rob Sanders, better known in the YouTube community as Road Guy Rob, has released a catalog of fun and informative videos answering such questions as "How do Interstate highways happen?", "Why are toll booths going away?" and "How do engineers make bridges earthquake safe?".

With bicycle sales and ridership skyrocketing, cities are having to reimagine the ways they account for and cater to cyclists at intersections.

Built on Iteris’ SmartCycle algorithm, which differentiates between bicycles and vehicles at intersections, the SmartCycle Bike Indicator is a device that mounts onto traffic signals, illuminates when cyclists waiting at an intersection have been detected and removes the need to touch a push button.
