Become Gender Savvy

Become Gender Savvy I am determined to improve the "workplace" life of women.

So determined that I wrote a book and started a consulting business to help businesses better understand how to become Gender Savvy and get more innovation, growth, and engagement.

So many times, a snarky comment is made, a voice is intentionally ignored, decisions are made without considering all parties. Yes, much of this is the result of our own unseen biases, but the only way out of this conundrum is for us to “see” what is happening. Often this is hard, and it really helps when others speak up. It is time for us to stand up for others with statements like…
What was the intent behind that comment?
Pauline just offered some great information; I’d like to discuss it more thoroughly.
No one from this group is represented here, let’s reconvene when we have all the stakeholders represented so we can get the full perspective before charting our course.

Statements like these lead people to think and that’s the first step.
You Can’t Fix What You Can’t See.

I accidentally discovered the absolute best graduation gift you can give a new graduate. Ready for it? It is also Priceless, but may take a smidgen of effort on your part. Tell your Graduate what they are good at.

My son, has a knack for picking movies for a group of people. We tell him what we’re feeling or what genre we want to watch and he ALWAYs picks a winner. I told him this one day and he said: “Oh, I didn’t know that was a special skill.” Well, it is (I didn’t know it was either, till I said it out loud).

When people understand and recognize their special skills, they can leverage them. If they don’t know they are special in some way, they won’t know how to differentiate themselves. It’s hard to see your own gifts. Give them the gift that can last a lifetime!

Interruptions – Study after stud has shown that men are 3 times more likely to interrupt women. From our lowly offices to the upper echelons of the Supreme Court, this statistic continues to be verified. We ought to note this and use it to guide our behavior. Are you interrupting or are you being interrupted?

What’s even more interesting is how we interpret interruptions.

Men were more likely to view a female who has interrupted them, as ruder, less friendly AND less intelligent than if the interrupter were male. Women who are interrupted did not show a significant bias in terms of whether a male or female interrupted them.

The surprising bit here was the altered perception of the female interrupter’s intelligence.

When someone interrupts you, what does your mind say to you about that person?

The least competent people tend to be the most confident in their abilities. The phenomena is so prevalent that it even has a name: the Dunning-Krugar Effect. You may have run into this at work, on occasion. Keep in mind that those that suffer from this are not aware of the disconnect. Perhaps we should call it inappropriate confidence? They actually believe they deliver better performance than they do.

We believe this is why we see data like this:

Only 17% of the people in a film crew’s scenes are female, but the perception of men is that there are 50% women. - From the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media

Or

54% of the men surveyed said men and women are allies in reaching gender equality, yet only 31% of women agreed - From a survey of 3000 employees of business and law firms.

We think it may happen as people fill in the voids of information based on their experience, which may not match the actual experience of people involved.

Last Friday I helped a friend celebrate moving into a new home, her “retirement” home. We met at her new place before any of the boxes or furniture arrived. Our stated intent was to line the kitchen shelves but I thought, “This should be a celebration!”

I decided to bring a party along and grabbed a delightful backpack designed just for this purpose! It was given to me by my financial planner, Kim, the Founder of Tech Girl Financial, a few years ago. As I was stuffing it with champagne, cheese and crackers, I had another thought, isn’t it marvelous that I can take off on a Friday and go help out my friend. Yes, marvelous, but not an accident by any stretch of the imagination. This I can also ascribe to my work ethic along with smart financial planning.

We celebrate when we hit major milestones. Often years of work have gone into our endeavors.

Today I want to celebrate the efforts of those who help us along on our journeys. We all have countless people that we trust to offer us the right guidance when we need it. Thank You Kim Glaxiola of Tech Girl Financial for allowing my dreams to become reality!

I’ve spent many years working in the corporate environment at hi-tech firms. I don’t need to do that anymore, but many others do. Today, I thought I would share my learnings in hopes that as we redesign the way we work, we can learn from the past.

We need to understand our differences and create new norms that allow everyone to flourish. That means we will also have to be able to converse about our differences. I am talking about differences in how we process information, perceive the world, and what we personally value.

Turns out we have our preferred styles that are often quite different. However, we usually assume everyone else uses the same system we do and that’s where we can get into trouble. This assumption leads to many disconnects at work that erode trust and breed discontent.

How often you have conversations were differences are discussed in your workplace? I get it, it’s hard to do, mainly because we don’t have the right language to facilitate these conversations.

Elon Musk is buying Twitter because he wants to purportedly wants to promote free speech. At the same time Tesla is being sued over accusations of racial and gender harassment, of the likes of African American employees being welcomed by their manager with phrases like, “Welcome to the slave house,” and multiple references to the n-word used in the workplace.

Twitter employees are rightfully nervous.

If Musk’s version of free speech looks like what appears to be happening in his own companies, then I’m not sure I want to see the new version of Musk’s Twitter.

Seriously, all three of these articles appeared in today’s paper, on the front page of the first section, the local section, and the business sections. It does make you wonder.

I would love to get a discussion started here – How can we help motivate men to read other people’s emotions?

Men are quite capable of reading emotions. In a fascinating study, researchers discovered that men can read emotions just as well as women. The key was they do so only when the right expectations and motivation are involved, when they believe their cognitive ability (intelligence) is being tested. If you tell them empathy is being tested forget it. However, test college-aged men and infer that their ability to read another person’s emotion might result in more s*x, and their scores dramatically improve. Perhaps that means men just don’t normally feel motivated to read emotions.

I extracted the info above from my book, You Can’t Fix What You Can’t See: An Eye-Opening Toolkit for Cultivating Gender Harmony in Business.

I’m thinking “How might we help men to be motivated to read emotions?” Please add your constructive suggestion in the comments. And yes, I’d love to hear from the men who are motivated. Share the secrets of your success!

Have you ever wanted to speak out on a topic that you care deeply about? And found your fear overcame you and effectively muted your voice?

That used to happen to me too. But since I have joined Toastmasters I am no longer mute, and can eloquently get my point across in a way that makes a real difference in the world.

Do you want to let your voice out? Then come join my club’s Earthday Celebration! You will hear speakers who are polishing their voices so they can make a difference in the world. You’ll get a chance to share during Table Topics and can see how the Toastmasters program works to help people learn the art of speaking.

The best news is this is hybrid meeting (so you can join from anywhere on Zoom) and if you’re near Santa Clara University you have the option to join in person. Here’s the info:

Santa Clara University MBA Toastmasters on April 22, 2022
6-7:30pm (PDT) on Zoom bit.ly/scumbat
and in person at
Santa Clara University in Lucas Hall Room 208.

“We need to rewrite the rules for work in a way that leverages differences in people rather than judging them” – from “You Can’t Fix What You Can’t See”

The new rules must also accommodate the Information Age in which we now live. Understanding everything is no longer possible; the world has gotten too complicated for that. You must rely on experts from many disciplines and they, in turn, must be able to interact to generate cross-functional solutions we need. We must be able to rely on our teams.

To do this, we need to create a new language in our workplaces that facilitates understanding through the discussion of differences. Our different perspectives are the exact ingredients we need to be more innovative and creative, but the different perspectives must actually be heard. We need to retrain our heads to shed the “us” versus “them” mentality and recognize that we all need to co-exist together.

If you want more innovation and creativity and the ability to conquer even higher mountains, then you may benefit by reading this book to understand and change what’s holding you and others back. https://www.youcantfixwhatyoucantsee.com/
