Joyeeta’s poster presentation will spotlight advances in high-precision, low-drift monitoring for N₂O, CO, and now with improved ¹³CO₂. The work highlights Picarro’s PI5310 analyzer, which integrates mid-infrared laser-based cavity ring-down spectrometry with software and hardware enhancements designed to support reliable long-term field measurements. The poster also explores how improved ¹³CO₂ measurement capability can support clearer isotopic fingerprinting of CO₂ sources and pathways when used alongside other near-infrared greenhouse gas analyzers.

In an area with multiple potential sources, how do you tell where methane emissions actually come from? In our latest Picarro Spotlight, we highlight research from Sebastien Biraud, Andrew B. Moyes, and colleagues at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory demonstrating how combining methane carbon isotope (δ¹³CH₄) measurements with ethane-to-methane ratios (C₂:C₁) accurately distinguished between emissions from natural gas infrastructure, oil and gas operations, dairies, wastewater treatment plants, and other sources in California’s San Joaquin Valley.

Using the Picarro G2210-i Carbon Isotope CH₄ and C₂H₆ Analyzer, researchers characterized unique chemical fingerprints that transformed methane detection into confident source attribution. In one case, isotopic measurements identified an abandoned oil well, not the nearby gas distribution network, as the source of a persistent methane plume. In others, utilities confirmed and repaired the largest pipeline leaks identified through the measurements, achieving significant emissions reductions.

The study demonstrates how high-precision isotope and ethane measurements can help researchers and operators move beyond detecting methane to understanding its source—enabling faster investigations, targeted mitigation, and more effective emissions management.

Are you ready for Front Range Isotope Day this FRIDay? Joyeeta Bhattacharya will be there at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) at the University of Colorado. She’ll be speaking about how Picarro’s Sage Gas Autosampler automates dilution for discrete gas isotope analysis.

Joyeeta and the Picarro application team’s study demonstrates that the Sage autofill provides linear, predictable dilution for high-concentration greenhouse gas samples, reducing manual handling and improving batch-scale reproducibility for isotopic measurements of greenhouse gases, as for example δ¹³C of CO₂. The workflow supports faster, more reproducible CRDS analysis across soil incubation, chamber headspace, and dissolved-gas applications, offering an efficient alternative to the legacy peripheral- small-sample introduction module. In his presentation, "Stay Ahead of Emissions Risk with Proactive, Source-Level Monitoring," Picarro's Chief Commercial & Product Officer, Haavard Oestensen, explored how refiners and chemical manufacturers can move beyond reactive compliance toward risk-informed emissions management.

A key takeaway: not all emission sources carry the same risk. By combining high-precision ambient air monitoring with cloud-based analytics, operators can identify the few sources responsible for the majority of emissions, prioritize action, and address issues before they become compliance events.
This shift toward managing by exception enables facilities to focus resources where they'll have the greatest impact, reducing emissions, strengthening permit defensibility, and improving stakeholder confidence.
