Just a middle-aged white American woman doing my best to break cycles of commercialized racism. Eat nachos and drink margaritas all you want, but don't do it in the name of some bu****it made-up American holiday. Cinco de Mayo marks the anniversary of the 1862 victory of Mexican troops over invading French forces at the Battle of Puebla. What do you call a "holiday" that isn't celebrated by most of its country of origin but that generates special beer can editions? Is colonial imperialism the right phrase here? Or is it appropriation for the capitalist gains of an oppressing nation? Call it what you will; just don't be an as***le.
