This will be the last daily update we (PVFD) will share regarding the Frijoles Fire. The strong containment lines on the west and north sides of the fire have significantly reduced risk to several communities and other values. This is not meant to diminish the ongoing impact of the fire to the wilderness and watersheds of great value to our communities and ecosystem. Rest easy, Randy Lupe. Please see the comments for links to pages where Mr. Lupe's friends and family are sharing memories and tributes to this brave and kind soul.

We are saddened to share the identity of the crewmember we lost on the Frijoles Fire in northern New Mexico on Sunday. Randy Lupe, 62, of the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona, died following a medical emergency.

Lupe was a U.S. Wildland Fire Service temporary emergency support crewmember on the San Carlos camp crew, which was supporting federal wildfire response on the Frijoles Fire.
Out of consideration for the family, the Interior Department is not releasing additional medical information at this time.

This loss is felt deeply across the wildland firefighting community, and our thoughts are with all those affected.

The community meeting for the Frijoles Fire scheduled for this evening in Truchas has been cancelled.

Update: Community Meeting Canceled

California Interagency Incident Management Team 8 is deeply saddened to confirm the tragic loss of an incident support crew member from a medical event on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

Due to this loss, the meeting has been canceled.

The PVFD joins the rest of northern NM and beyond in extending condolences to the family, friends, firefighters and incident management team members on the loss of a support crew member.

Mourning the Loss of Coworker After Medical Emergency During Incident Support

California Interagency Incident Management Team 8 is deeply saddened to confirm that a medical emergency has ended in the tragic loss of an incident support crew member assigned to the Frijoles Fire.

The medical incident occurred yesterday, Sunday, August 23, 2026. Emergency personnel responded immediately, the patient was transported to a local hospital and despite the efforts of emergency medical responders, the patient did not survive the medical event.

“Our hearts are with the family, friends, coworkers and all those affected by this tragic loss,” said Incident Commander, Mike Page. “Every person supporting the Frijoles Fire is an important part of our team. We are grieving alongside our fire family and will do everything we can to support those impacted.”

We ask that the privacy of the individual’s family, friends, and coworkers be respected during this difficult time.
