As the weather gets more extreme, how do we care for our soil, plants and water? What is our connection to this changing landscape? Amidst drought and degeneration, where do we see opportunities and abundance? How do we best practice observation and experimentation? And what (if anything) does the land ask us to do?

Based on 30 years of work experience in New Mexico, Jan-Willem Jansens of Ecotone Landscape Planning will share choices, principles and practices for landscape-scale, comprehensive, ecological planning.

A landscape architect and ecological planner by training, Jan-Willem Jansens specializes in landscape management planning, ecological restoration planning and design, and land stewardship education. He has developed particular expertise in forest and woodland ecology, watershed health, and collaborative stewardship work with communities and landowners.

For the last two years, Ecotone has been working on soil health and permaculture approaches to restore the Quay Ranch in Tucumcari. Our last workshop in May 2022 included various techniques to improve the land’s health, such as erosion control structures, Hügels, and scattering organic materials across bare areas. We just finished our annual monitoring. Just look at how the land is responding to our treatments! There is more green grass everywhere, grass is growing back in large bare spots after covering them with mesquite slash and directing water to them from in-stream water-spreading structures. Stay tuned for another volunteer opportunity in October to learn these techniques yourself!
