Blessingway author Christina Donnell's latest seedbed of wisdom, Encounters with Living Language, was just named a 2024 Nautilus Book Award winner, the silver medal recipient in the category World Cultures' Transformational Growth & Development. This intimate book, free of spiritual dogma, shows how words, in inviting us to surrender to their unifying potential, can awaken within us an awareness essential to human survival: the felt sense of a wider cosmic net of relationships to one another and the rest of the living world. We are thrilled to see its tendrils reaching into that world.

Living Language Gets Fresh Ink
Clinical psychologist and covert visionary Christina Donnell received a curious inquiry from a reader of her riveting new book, Encounters with Living Language: Surrendering to the Power of Words. The woman wanted permission to tattoo a line from chapter 7—“I want to know where the wind gathers its strength so I can go there”—on her body, a befitting request for a book about somatic-sensory impressions of words. Talk about embodying language!

Straight through the Labyrinth: Becoming a Gay Father in China by Princeton-based sinologist Peter Rupert Lighte, founding chairman of J.P. Morgan Chase Bank China, was launched just in time for National Adoption Month (November). Hailed as “a dazzling story” that’s “hugely important,” it chronicles the travails surmounted by Hong Kong’s first adoptive gay father in pursuing his dream of parenting an orphaned baby girl from China—and soon after, a second one. In the words of an Amazon reviewer: “The story of Lighte’s odyssey through China’s adoption bureaucracy is hair-raising and heart-breaking…. It’s not just that it’s well written, it’s also filled with passion. . . . Lighte’s candor, his openness, his self-awareness, all contribute to the reader’s understanding of the author’s drive to parenthood against all odds. In this historic time in our nation, this is the kind of story that reminds me of the good in the world.”

Peter Lighte, now the father of two Barnard women, will be discussing the book with Rabbi Gil Steinlauf at the Princeton Public Library on November 15 at 7:30 pm EST. To view the event live, visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzIGrOOtNkA.

Lesley Lowe’s first book, Autumn Gold, receives another rave review. This riveting story of her daughter’s heroic fight with multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer, is not only a tribute to the young, spunky, brilliant biracial attorney but also a testament to the beauty and power of her connection with nature. Reader Views calls it “an intelligently put-together text that is full of blazing themes and emotional shifts in its characters.” The reviewer adds: “Lowe’s ardent writing summons the reader’s emotions, giving the text an overall emotional sweep. This book deserves 5 stars on account of its adroit characterization, which alone makes this an imperative read.”

Applause to Lesley Lowe, author of Autumn Gold: A Rendezvous with Cancer, Knowing Death Is Not Final, for glowing recognition following its recent launch. Her book recounts the story of her daughter Vashti, a vibrant biracial Albuquerque attorney who, diagnosed with multiple myeloma in her early thirties, unexpectedly reunites with the love of her life. Thus interwoven with her courageous eighteen-month battle with cancer—including two bone marrow transplants—is a deepening love story, uplifting her each step of the way as she bravely faces death on her own terms. A review in the Albuquerque Journal at the start of Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month dubs the book “a deeply personal story of love, loss, and courage,” saying it “will warm your heart . . . and break your heart.” A recent interview with Lesley on KSFR’s “The Last Word” can be found at https://thelastword.libsyn.com/.

Hearty felicitations to Daniel Fallon on his book’s first two reviews, both 5-star ratings. His mysterious and deeply humane book, Love’s Legacy: Viscount Chateaubriand and the Irish Girl, chronicles his search for hidden meaning in two letters addressed in 1817 to his great-great-grandfather by French romantic writer François-René de Chateaubriand. As clever as it is wise, the narrative portrays the surprising impact people’s lives can have on those born centuries later.

Readers’ Favorite historical reviewer Grant Leishman notes: “An air of discovery and excitement in every page . . . kept me totally enthralled. I can highly recommend this read.” Irene Valentine, also with Readers’ Favorite, writes: “This engaging account highlights the value of education in developing a curious and creative mind.... I recommend Love’s Legacy also for the sheer pleasure of its delicious wordsmithing. This story of five generations, delivered in a concise book with nothing extraneous, but with several historical documents and portraits, is a feat in itself. May this dedicated work of nonfiction prompt many to record and preserve their family history for their own Love’s Legacy.”

Daniel Fallon, professor emeritus of psychology and professor emeritus of public policy at the University of Maryland at College Park, works as a higher education consultant and lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For more information or to place an order, please visit loveslegacybook.com.

Rarely has a work of fiction about an adolescent runaway emerged as a teaching story so early in its gestation. Even before The Car Thief: A Boy’s Perilous Journey through the Juvenile Justice System by Vicki Reed went to press in February, it had become a Coalition for Juvenile Justice (CJJ) book club selection. Within days of its release in March, Vicki was a guest speaker on the Ending Human Trafficking Podcast aired in 121 countries by the California-based Global Center for Women & Justice. Also in March a social work professor and a law school professor recommended the book as mandatory reading for their classes, and it became required staff reading for the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program of Ohio Valley. Rosemary Conder, executive director of the program, calls The Car Thief “the perfect tool” for those charged with increasing the understanding of traumatic injustices children experience. In her words: “The Car Thief engaged me from the first paragraph. The fictional story has so many elements familiar to many of the children we see in our community. While the story paints heartbreaking images, it also offers hope, encouragement, and a challenge for providers….This book can help our volunteer Advocates understand some of the unique needs of the children they serve, while stimulating conversations around local policies, bias, and ‘what if’ scenarios.” Bravo to our author Vicki Reed and her publisher Soaring Wings Press for a tender, often humorous, trauma-informed tale of the power of love in transforming today’s juvenile justice system. The book is available through the publisher’s website, nobadkid.com, at an introductory discount.
