Backups aren't the same as a recovery plan.

If a server crashes, a pipe bursts, or ransomware locks up your files — having backups doesn't automatically mean you're back up and running fast. You need a real plan for restoring them, and a plan for how your team keeps working while that happens.

We put together a simple breakdown of business continuity vs. disaster recovery — what each one covers, and why most small businesses in Santa Fe and Albuquerque need both. Link below in comments. 👇

Quick question: if your office was broken into tomorrow, could thieves steal your valuable information?

A lot of business owners think they're covered because they have a backup. But here's the catch — an external hard drive sitting in your office can disappear or be destroyed by crime, fire, flood, or ransomware attack that takes out your original files.

That's why we don't pick one or the other. We set clients up with both:

📁 Local backup — fast recovery when someone accidentally deletes a file
☁️ Cloud backup — a copy stored off-site with version history, so you can survive a disaster that wipes out the whole office

And ransomware doesn't play fair — it actively hunts for backups too. So we test restores regularly and monitor everything, because a backup you've never tested is just a guess.

Not sure what setup you actually have? We offer a free, no-obligation review to find out.

Heads up! If an email tells you to "download this to view your document," pause before you click.

Scammers are using real IT software (the kind tech companies use to fix your computer) to sneak onto people's machines. It looks legit, so antivirus doesn't flag it — but once it's installed, they're in control.

This year, a fake IRS email tricked thousands of people this exact way.

Simple rule: real documents don't ask you to install a program. If you're not sure what's on your work computer, ask your IT team to check.

Stay safe out there!

Quick question: what's scarier to your business — a hacker in a hoodie, or Dave from accounting clicking a sketchy link on a Friday afternoon?

Turns out, it's Dave. No offense, Dave!

Studies show that about 60% of data breaches involve some kind of human mistake — a reused password, a rushed click, a skipped software update. Not because people are careless, but because we're all human, and attackers know exactly how to exploit that.

The good news? You can't "fix" human nature, but you CAN build a workplace where the safe choice is also the easy choice. Think: password managers, multi-factor authentication, and training that doesn't put everyone to sleep.

Curious how this plays out at a real company level? We wrote a full breakdown — link in comments.

Most cyberattacks don’t happen because hackers are “genius level.”

They happen because something simple was missed… like a software update.

That’s what patch management is.

It’s the process of keeping your computers, apps, and systems updated so known security issues get fixed before attackers can use them.

When updates are skipped, businesses can face:
• Ransomware attacks
• Data loss
• Downtime
• Expensive repairs

The scary part? Even one outdated device can create risk for your whole business.

Patch management isn’t flashy, but it’s one of the easiest ways to stay protected.

If you’re not sure how often your systems are being updated, it might be time to take a closer look.

Quick exercise for business owners:

Add up what you paid for IT last year. Repairs, subscriptions, any tech support bills.

Now ask yourself — does that number include:

1. The hours your employees spent waiting for slow computers to catch up?

2. The premium you paid for that emergency repair at the worst possible time?

3. The software licenses still renewing for employees who left 6 months ago?

4. The time your manager spent troubleshooting the network instead of managing the team?

5. The security incident you narrowly avoided — or didn't?

For most businesses, the honest answer to all of those is no.

And THAT is the real IT budget — the one with all the hidden costs included.

We just published a post that walks through every one of these shadow costs and helps you find them in your own setup. It's a quick read and worth sharing with anyone who manages a budget.

Business owners: scammers are targeting employees on LinkedIn — and many people don’t realize it.

Cybercriminals are using fake job offers, fake executive accounts, and phishing links to steal passwords, money, and company information.

Why does it work? Because LinkedIn feels professional and trustworthy, so people are more likely to believe the messages.

Here are a few common scams:

✅ Fake recruiters sending harmful files
✅ Scammers pretending to be a CEO asking for money
✅ Fake links disguised as webinars or shared documents
✅ Fake business offers targeting company leaders

We just shared 7 simple ways businesses can help protect employees from these scams.

Here's the math most business owners get wrong when comparing break-fix IT to managed services:

❌ "We spend $2,000/year on IT repairs. Managed IT is $750/month. That's 5x more expensive."

The problem: that math only counts the repair invoices.

It doesn't count:
— The countless hours of downtime last year
— The senior employee who spent days on a data recovery issue
— The phishing attack that slipped through on an unpatched system
— The client who didn't renew because of data security concerns

When businesses track ALL the costs — not just IT invoices — break-fix almost never wins.

We broke this down in detail in our latest post. Worth a read if you're evaluating your IT setup heading into the next quarter.

https://www.zianetworks.net/blog/why-well-deal-with-it-when-it-breaks-is-your-most-expensive-it-policy/

Almost every business owner has said it at some point. The computer network is acting up. The software is way out of date. The server has been slow for months. But nothing has completely stopped working yet — so why spend money on it now? “We’ll deal with it when it breaks.” It sounds like [...

Most small businesses aren't ignoring cybersecurity. They just built it the wrong way. 😬

They added a tool when a new threat showed up. Then another. Then another.

On paper, it looks like they're covered. But in reality? There are gaps — and hackers find them.

Here are 5 things most small business security setups are missing:

1. Stronger login protection (basic two-step sign-in can still be fooled)
2. Clear rules for which devices can access company systems
3. Email filters that catch threats before anyone even sees them
4. Proof that software updates are actually happening — not just scheduled
5. A real plan for what to do when something goes wrong

And here's the scary part — 94% of cybersecurity experts say AI is making attacks faster, smarter, and harder to spot in 2026. The threats aren't slowing down.

The good news? You don't have to fix everything at once.

Start with your biggest weak spot. Fix it. Make sure it's working. Then move to the next one.

Good security isn't about having every tool out there. It's about making sure the tools you have actually work together.

Which of these gaps do you think most small businesses miss? Drop it in the comments — we'd love to hear your thoughts! 👇
