A Walk in the Clouds.

Harvest mornings have been *foggggyyyyyy* at Our Lady of Guadalupe Vineyard in Lompoc. This marine layer is a defining feature of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, where cool mornings and afternoon winds off the Pacific give our thin-skinned friend (Pinot Noir) the extended hang time it needs to develop flavor without losing its delicate character.

This early vintage has also brought lower pH and higher acidity than usual, so Billy added a few boxes of whole clusters to the fermentation. The added stem contact helps soften the acidity naturally, giving the finished wine a bit more balance and structure.

As you've no doubt seen from our tongue-in-cheek post last month, harvest has begun--a full four weeks earlier than last vintage. So, what does harvesting a month early do to the wine?

We had a very early March, which pushed budbreak/bloom/set, etc. about a month early, so in terms of growing degree days we are at about the same as last year but just shifted about four weeks earlier. While it can be a bit cheeky of us to assume anything at this point, so far we are seeing good flavor development and balance in sugars/acids.

This early vintage might be a blessing in disguise for certain varieties which can sometimes take so long to ripen that the canopy starts shutting down before the grapes are really ready. We will see how weather impacts everything in the coming weeks!

In short, it’s all up to Mother Nature and how we can adapt to what she throws our way.
