United Policyholders is a great advocacy organization for homeowners.

Today we mark the anniversary of the ‘91 Oakland Firestorm and carefully watch to make sure every last ember of the in the Oakland Hills is extinguished.

UP was founded after the firestorm 33 years ago to help level the playing field between insurers and insureds. Oakland/Berkeley Firestorm survivors we helped continue to pay it forward by volunteering with UP and sending donations to help us be there for the next disaster impacted community. Our services, expertise and experience are needed now more than ever.

A new commercial metal roof and at least 5ft of noncombustible material around the perimeter of the house were both great ideas to deter fire. Luck and the wind direction also likely played a factor in sparing this historic home. As wildfires become more and more frequent, it's important to look at clearing the zone around your home to prevent flames from jumping from neighboring properties.
