🦷 9-year follow-up: can you guess which ceramic crown is implant-supported?

Look closely at the two upper central incisors. One is supported by a natural tooth, while the other has been supported by a ceramic implant for nine years.
Can you identify it from the clinical photograph alone?

👇 Correct Answer is in the comments bellow:

CeraRoot 11 of 10mm ready to be restored. Small gingivectomy needed to exposed the buccal margin of the implant. In order to avoid gum regrowth over margin, a “Healing Ring” is seated over the abutment and margin. Another zirconia implant in the premolar shows good bone/gum health. 🦷 14 YEARS OF FOLLOW-UP | CERAROOT 16
Long-term follow-up is where implant dentistry really proves itself. ⏳
This case documents 14 years of clinical and radiographic follow-up of a CeraRoot 16 one-piece zirconia implant, replacing the mandibular right second molar #47.
The original molar presented with a vertical root fracture and infection and had to be extracted.
⏱️ After 2 months of healing, a CeraRoot 16 implant was placed and subsequently restored.
📸 The radiographic follow-ups at 1 year, 5 years and 14 years show excellent preservation of the peri-implant bone levels.
14 years later:
🦴 Excellent crestal bone stability
🌿 Healthy peri-implant soft tissues
🦷 Excellent function in a posterior molar position
⚪ One-piece zirconia ceramic implant
⏳ 14 years of clinical and radiographic follow-up

Posterior molars are exposed to significant functional forces throughout their lifetime. Seeing this level of bone and soft-tissue stability after 14 years of function is therefore particularly meaningful.

👉 Implant success is defined by how it performs many years later.

Soft-Tissue Healing: 1 Week vs. 4 Months Post-Operatively

Early post-operative appearance should always be interpreted within the clinical context.

At the 1-week follow-up, extraction and immediate implant sites may present with fibrin deposition, PRF remnants, immature granulation tissue, and incomplete epithelialization. This appearance can sometimes be concerning to the patient—and may even resemble an infected site—without necessarily representing an active infection.

Clinical assessment should therefore consider the overall healing pattern and the presence or absence of signs and symptoms such as increasing pain, progressive swelling, purulent drainage, fever, or other evidence of infection.

As healing progresses, substantial soft-tissue remodeling and maturation can occur. The images demonstrate the evolution from the early post-operative phase to the 4-month follow-up, with mature peri-implant soft tissues and a favorable restorative environment.

During the early healing period, meticulous plaque control in the remainder of the dentition is particularly important, while the surgical site should be managed according to the prescribed post-operative protocol.

The 1-week appearance does not predict the final soft-tissue outcome. Tissue maturation takes time. Treatment performed by Dr. Carmen Burke | Family Holistic Dentistry
