Some nonprofits recently lost Microsoft 365 data after an error caused information to be permanently deleted.

Critical Microsoft 365 data should have an independent backup. Because sometimes the disaster you’re recovering from...isn’t yours.

Nobody gets excited about backups.

Until they need one.

A successful backup doesn’t necessarily mean a successful recovery. The real question is:

If everything went down today, how quickly could you get your business back?

Backups aren’t boring when everything is on fire.

Nine months.

That's how long unauthorized users had access to a Pentagon personnel system before the vulnerability was discovered.

The breach affected roughly 3 million people and exposed unencrypted personal information including Social Security numbers, birth dates, contact information and military personnel data.

There's an important cybersecurity lesson here for every organization:

Preventing someone from getting in is only one layer of security.

What happens if they do?

It revealed the names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, job specialties and other records of nearly 2.8 million living and 294,000 deceased individuals.

CPA firms handle some of the most sensitive client data out there—and the FTC expects that data to be protected accordingly.

The Safeguards Rule can require written security plans, MFA, risk assessments, vendor oversight, incident response, and more.

If your firm’s cybersecurity plan is still mostly “we have antivirus and backups,” it may be time for a closer look.

Florida CPA and tax firms may be subject to the FTC Safeguards Rule, including requirements for a written security plan, MFA, encryption, risk assessments, vendor oversight, incident response, and breach reporting.

AI doesn't make a business more efficient just because employees have access to it. They have to know how to use it.

The businesses that get the most from AI will likely be the ones that invest in training + practical use cases + good security, not simply another subscription.

What if AI didn’t just help you write? What if it actually learned how you write?

ChatGPT may soon be able to learn your tone and writing style from tools like Gmail or Slack, making responses sound more like you and less like a generic assistant.

That could make AI a lot more useful at work. BUT it also raises an important question:

Microsoft is making MFA mandatory for more Microsoft 365 users. And it’s a good thing.

Passwords alone aren’t enough anymore, especially with phishing and credential theft getting more convincing.

If your business uses Microsoft 365, now is a good time to make sure MFA is configured correctly before enforcement catches you off guard.

Microsoft is enforcing multi-factor authentication across Microsoft 365 and Azure admin access. Learn what is changing, who is affected, and what businesses should do now.

If your “security plan” mostly lives in someone’s head, it may be time to put it on paper.

The IRS recently reminded tax professionals that federal law requires a Written Information Security Plan (WISP) to protect client data.

That plan should address how your firm protects sensitive information, manages access, trains employees, responds to incidents, and evaluates security risks.

IR-2026-92, Aug. 18, 2026 — The Internal Revenue Service and Security Summit partners today reminded tax professionals to protect client data with a Written Information Security Plan.
