Parents Harry and Lee Ann's dreams were achieved in 1994 when they, and their ten year old son Matt moved to the Santa Ynez Valley. Blessed to watch vines take root around the surrounding Santa Barbara County Landscape, the McKinney's joined-in with the local viticulture movement. In 2010 Matt won a bet with his father after winning the Pro Puerto Rican Volleyball Championship. He was then allowed

to plant their first vineyard on the home property of Syrah & Viognier. Three years later Matt decided to move home to get into the wine industry full time. The McKinney's are now sharing their experience and passion with all, producing wines of exceptional quality and character. Working with Bordeaux, Rhone and Burgundy varietals, Matt, as the winemaker, sources grapes from the 5 unique Santa Barbara County AVA's to highlight the best of SBC viticulture. Our 2023 red wines, which are now being released, were the culmination of a truly prodigious year in Santa Barbara County wine country. Vineyards responded to a much cooler Summer growing season with a resounding sigh of relief. The result was finely tuned and well structured chemistry within the grape. Natural acidity levels held firm, rich and layered flavor profiles developed at a slow and desirable pace, and the grapevines gifted us with very impressive yields. Among our winemaking community here in SBC, it was unanimously considered a great vintage of distinction.

The vines are heavy, the grapes are sweet, and the countdown has officially begun. Harvest 2025 is nearly here, and the energy in the vineyard is electric.

After months of careful tending, we’re watching the fruit ripen to perfection — and we’re just days away from that first early morning pick. It’s a season of early mornings, sticky hands, and full hearts... and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Winemaking Team of McKinney Family Vineyards is hard at work at our Production Facility, doing a process called “racking” with our 2024 vintage Pinot Noirs 🍇

As the red wines spend their time aging in our French Oak barrels, they undergo a secondary fermentation called Malolactic Fermentation. This is when the natural Malic Acids begin converting over into Lactic acids, giving our red wines texture and depth. During this process as the wines age, spent yeast cells or the “lees” begin to settle at the bottom of the barrels.

Our Team Member Jake is seen here pulling the wines from the barrel to be temporarily stored in a stainless steel tank, while the barrel then gets cleaned of the “lees”, the purple residue. This is a way of fining our limited production wines to ensure consistency with overall quality, texture, and depth 🍷Interested in learning more about our winemaking process?
