In Rhode Island, lawmakers recently heard testimony on a bill that would ban the sale of birds at pet stores from breeders and brokers statewide.
Emotions are strong on both sides. And honestly? They come from the same place: a deep love for birds.
Ethical breeders dedicate years to proper genetics, socialization, and lifelong support for their birds. Rescue organizations work tirelessly to rehabilitate and rehome birds whose owners were unprepared or unsupported.
Both see the same truth: birds are intelligent, long-lived companions who require space, enrichment, education, and serious commitment.
At Wingz, we oppose the bill as written โ not because we dismiss rescue concerns, but because we believe blanket bans donโt solve the root issue.
The real solution?
Higher standards.
Stronger education.
Accountability.
Collaboration between responsible breeders and rescue networks.
When we fight each other, birds lose.
When we raise the bar together, birds win.
Letโs keep the focus where it belongs: on the welfare of these beautiful, intelligent lives.
