Most business owners will never sell their business.

Not because they don't want to. Because they waited too long to prepare.

Here's what I see every week as a business broker:

An owner decides it's time to exit. They call a broker. The broker pulls the financials, looks at the operations, asks about the team and the systems.

And the conversation gets uncomfortable.

The books aren't clean. The EBITDA is inconsistent. The revenue is tied to the owner's personal relationships. There are no documented processes. The team can't operate independently.

The business isn't sellable — at least not at the number the owner had in mind.

So what happens? Two things.

Either the listing sits on the market and gets discounted until a bottom-feeder picks it up for a fraction of what it's worth.

Or the owner pulls it off the market, keeps grinding for another few years, and hopes things improve.

Neither is the outcome they worked 20 years for.

Motivation is a feeling. Feelings fluctuate. They show up when it's convenient and disappear when it's hard.

Structure doesn't care how you feel.

The men who consistently perform at the highest level aren't more motivated than everyone else. They've built systems that execute regardless of their emotional state.
