The InterAgency Board for Equipment Standardization and Interoperability has released its "Fire and Emergency Services Multi-gas Detector Evaluation Guidance Document" that advocates for a more thorough evaluation of these devices prior to purchase. The due diligence of the recommended process involves a close evaluation of both the capabilities of the instrument and, more importantly, the strengths and weaknesses of each installed sensor. The document can be downloaded at: https://interagencyboard.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IABPUB-2024-01-Fire-and-Emergency-Services-MultiGas-Detector-Guidance.pdf.

The National Fire Academy announces the release of a new, on-line, self-study course Introduction to Energy Systems (ESS) (course code Q0757). Many of the modern devices that we use daily rely on some type of electrical source to power their operation. Many device manufacturers are using batteries to allow mobility and function without connection to the electrical power grid. In this course, you will learn to recognize energy storage system (ESS) concepts and principles so you can analyze the hazards involved with ESS incidents.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

Define an energy storage system (ESS)
Recognize hazards associated with ESS
Associate chemical ESS hazards with Lithium-Ion-Battery Energy Storage Systems (LiBESS)
Associate thermal ESS hazards with LiBESS
Identify response consideration during LiBESS incidents
Identify the post-incident operations following an ESS response

Apply on-line now!

Response Technologies recently provided 16 hours of didactic and hands-on training for Indian River County's Hazardous Materials Response Team. During day one responders were challenged with a variety of unknown materials to determine the classification of hazards and ultimately the identification of the substances using identification technologies such as the Rigaku CQL Raman analyzer. During day two, personnel worked on improving their response skills with hands-on training in topics such as hybrid decontamination, v***r and liquid propane flaring, hazard analysis and PPE selection and the control of petroleum leaks from DOT406 cargo tanks and chlorine railcars using Response Technologies extensive cache of training props.

Funding for this program was provided by the Treasure Coast Local Emergency Planning Council. Response Technologies is proud to partner with Industrial Scientific, Rigaku, and First Line Technologies to help provide high level training for these responders.

Response Technologies has a diverse team of instructors, each bringing a unique set of skills and experiences to the classroom, enriching our programs. Periodically we would like to introduce them to give a little background about who they are and what they've done. This time around we would like to highlight Tyler Hoke!

Tyler Hoke is a senior firefighter and hazardous materials specialist at Greensboro (NC) Fire Department. Before becoming a firefighter, Tyler received a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Working in a lab wasn't all it was cracked up to be for Tyler, and after volunteering at White Cross Fire Department in rural Chapel Hill, he decided to pursue a career in firefighting. Tyler has been a firefighter with Greensboro FD for over 8 years, and has been a member of both the Greensboro FD Hazmat Team and the North Carolina Regional Response Team 5 for over 5 years. He has responded to incidents ranging from anhydrous ammonia releases, clandestine drug labs, and a fire involving over 500 tons of ammonium nitrate.

In addition to his emergency response experience, Tyler stays very active as a hazardous materials instructor, having taught with Response Technologies for almost 3 years. He teaches recruit classes and in-service training at Greensboro FD, and works with local community colleges and the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal to teach hazmat on a regional and state level. On a national level, Tyler is an instructor and subject matter expert for the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD where he has taught and developed hazmat courses. He is also a Master Hazmat Instructor with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). Using his chemistry background, Tyler has a particular interest in teaching with actual hazardous materials and a hands-on approach.

Keep in mind the fire hazards during severe weather:
☑️Lightning
☑️Portable generators not often used or maintained
☑️Leaking gas lines, damaged gas propane containers and leaking vehicle gas tanks
☑️Appliances and vehicles exposed to water
☑️Debris near severed electrical wires and transformers
☑️Damaged or downed utility lines
☑️Exposed electrical outlets and wiring

If you are using a generator after , ensure you are using it correctly.
☑️ Don't use a generator in a wet area.
☑️ Use heavy-duty extension cords.
☑️ Do not fuel your generator when it is running. Spilling gas on a hot engine can cause a fire.
