The Petersen Ranch Mitigation Bank consists of two sites in unincorporated Los Angeles County: the 3,919 acre Petersen Ranch near Leona Valley and the 317 acre Elizabeth Lake site on the shores of Elizabeth Lake. It is within the boundaries of both the proposed San Andreas Rift Zone Significant Ecological Area and the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan Area. The bank sites are topographical

ly and biologically diverse with dominant vegetative communities including seasonal wetlands, ephemeral and desert washes, and alluvial floodplains. There is extensive foraging and nesting habitat for Swainson’s hawk. The bank property drains to both the Santa Clara River and Antelope-Fremont Valley watersheds, and is positioned to provide CEQA mitigation credits for numerous special status species and habitats and Army Corps’ mitigation for impacts to wetlands/waters, with service areas including portions of Los Angeles, Ventura, San Bernardino, and Kern Counties. The bank approval process is underway and is expected to be completed by late 2014.

On a recent site visit, WRA biologist Matthew Schliebe captured some incredible activity at the Petersen Ranch Mitigation Bank in Los Angeles County.

These images show Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) larvae and Crotch’s bumblebee (Bombus crotchii) on the narrowleaf milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis), a California native and pollinator host plant of choice.

On May 2nd, WRA, Inc. biologists led the Inter-agency Review Team on their annual tour of the Petersen Ranch Mitigation Bank. The tour focused on the incredible development that has occurred this year in the process-based alluvial fan and dry wash restoration sites.
