SAVANNAH EARTH DAY CELEBRATION RETURNS APRIL 21, 2023 IN DAFFIN PARK

SAVANNAH, GA MARCH 10, 2023—The official Earth Day Savannah celebration returns for the first time since 2019 on April 21 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Daffin Park, 1301 E. Victory Drive. The 2023 Earth Day Savannah theme is “Our Future is Bright” to educate and engage the public on the clean energy goals of the 100% Savannah Plan.

Earth Day Savannah celebrates environmental sustainability and conservation efforts in the Savannah community. Under the canopy of Daffin’s beautiful live oaks, event attendees will connect with businesses and community organizations that are committed to protecting the planet and promoting eco-friendly practices. This family-friendly event will include live performances, educational activities, exhibitions, and food trucks.

“We intend to shine light on what sustainable living looks like and how it can benefit you,” said Clean Energy Program Manager Alicia Brown. “Often, conversations about sustainability focus on what we may have to give up, instead of what we will gain, or they emphasize how far we must go instead of how far we’ve come. The goal for Earth Day 2023 is to show the public that our future is bright, and that the actions we must take together will ultimately lead to a healthier, more prosperous, more equitable community.”

Since 2000, Earth Day Savannah has been Savannah’s largest environmental event of the year and has become one of the largest educational events in conjunction with Earth Day in Georgia. This event serves as an important opportunity for local government, businesses, nonprofits, and community groups to connect with the public and each other.

“Earth Day Savannah is where our whole community can come together to celebrate the beautiful environment of Coastal Georgia and learn more about how we can be better neighbors to the planet and each other,” said Denise Cheeseman, the City of Savannah’s Sustainability Project Manager. “Whether you’re exploring placing solar panels on your roof or simply looking for a free, family-friendly Friday evening, we look forward to welcoming you to Daffin Park on the 21st.”

The City of Savannah is currently accepting registrations for event volunteers and exhibitors (non-profits or sustainable businesses) at www.earthdaysavannah.org.

Earth Day Savannah is hosted by the City of Savannah Office of Sustainability, with support from the Savannah Chatham Sustainability Coalition, Pratt Industries - Recycling Division, and other local business sponsors.

Interesting article by Joe F. Bozeman III, the lead author and an assistant professor in Georgia Tech’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

“Planning, professional, and community stakeholders,” the researchers write in the paper, “should recognize that working together gets cities closer to harmonizing the technological and social dimensions of sustainability.”

The second focus area, circularity, addresses resource consumption of staple commodities including food, water, and energy; the waste and emissions they generate; and the opportunities to increase conservation of those resources by boosting efficiencies.

“What we mean by circularity is basic reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling efforts across the entire urban system — which not only includes cities and under resourced areas within those cities — but also rural communities that supply and take resources from those city hubs,” Bozeman said. The idea is aligned with the circular economy concept which addresses the need to move away from the resource-wasteful and unsustainable cycle of taking, making, and throwing away."

An international coalition of researchers — led by Georgia Tech — have determined that advancements and innovations in urban research and design must incorp

Question of the day: Can pizza boxes be recycled?

It turns out with minimal effort, pizza boxes are recyclable. In fact, the paper, recycling and pizza industries are coming together to get recycling programs to accept empty corrugated pizza boxes and to make sure their guidelines clearly state that they are accepted!

A hotly debated topic, the recyclability of a pizza box has long eluded many consumers. It turns out with minimal effort, pizza boxes are recyclable. In fact...

"Contrary to previous and fairly common beliefs, pizza boxes may be recycled. A recent industry study noted that cheese and grease residue from pizzas does not have an impact on the recyclability of the boxes.

“A majority of recycling programs, including those at Pratt Industries, will accept used pizza boxes, helping to divert the material from landfills,” says Shawn State, President of Pratt Recycling, Inc., “and working with the right partner, like Pratt, can help create a circular journey for your pizza boxes.”

Pratt Recycling takes the recovered pizza boxes, along with other old corrugated containers, to one of Pratt’s 100% recycled paper mills where the recovered fiber is used to produce new containerboard, and perhaps eventually, even new pizza boxes."

Approximately three billion pizza boxes are manufactured in the U.S. each year1 and nearly 12.5 million of those pizzas are purchased for Super Bowl Sunday alone according to American Pizza Community. Pratt Industries is proud to be a producer, supplier and recycler of pizza boxes used to celebrate....
