Juneteenth marks the day which all enslaved people were made aware of their liberation! 🙌🏾 As much as this day celebrates freedom, it’s also an avenue for people to celebrate African-American culture and traditions, plus an opportunity to reflect on how we can move forward. 🖤💛💚❤️

Etiquette in Black History
👠🪡💄Eunice Johnson- The Ambassador of Beauty (1916-2010)
Eunice Johnson, a fashion icon, wife, and mother, made her mark in the world of publishing, fashion, and cosmetics. She graduated with a degree in sociology from Talladega College in 1938. During college, Johnson joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and met her future husband, John H. Johnson, in 1940 while attending Loyola University- Chicago. Together, they built the largest black-owned publishing company in history.

They started Ebony magazine in 1945 and Jet magazine in 1951. At its peak, Ebony and Jet enjoyed a circulation of over 1.25 million subscribers. This was during a time when there was no social media or even email. The Johnsons worked to paint a beautiful and sophisticated view of Black people for the world.

Mrs. Johnson's next endeavor would catapult her from publisher to "fashion icon" and etiquette extraordinaire. She was asked to coordinate a charity fashion show for a hospital, hence came the Ebony Fashion Fair show launching in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1958.

In 1973, after coordinating more than 2,000 shows in 180 cities including the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean for 15 years (I, owner of Impressum Etiquette, Jordan Riles, won 2008 Miss Ebony Fashion Fair raising over $10,000 in scholarship funds,) Mrs. Johnson began her makeup quest creating foundation colors to match the skin for women of color more closely. Fashion Fair Cosmetics line was produced and distributed and can still be found on store shelves today.

Etiquette in Black History
🎩🏢 James Wormley- The King of Hospitality
Not only was he significant for his ownership of the first integrated hotel in Washington, D.C.; James quickly became known for his excellent customer service, which granted him favor with many of Washington's prominent politicians.

Like his father, Wormley started his own hackney business (horse-drawn vehicle) and eventually became a steward at the Metropolitan Club. To his satisfaction, Rep. Reverdy Johnson was named minister of England and took Wormley as his personal chef. While in Europe, he learned how to cook European-style dishes which would later set his hotel apart from all others.

Though there were other hotels and bed and breakfasts owned by Blacks, the Wormley Hotel had a reputation for Wormley's world-class meals and impeccable taste.

One of Wormley's crowning achievements was the passage of a new bill for funding from Congress for the first publicly-funded school for African American students on June 21, 1871. After his death, Wormley's son continued to manage the hotel until 1890.

Etiquette in Black History:
🫖 📖 Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown
Born in 1883, Lottie Hawkins became one of the world’s most well-respected educators, lecturers, and authors who built etiquette and social graces into the foundation of her illustrious education career.
Her first job offer was to teach in a one-room class at the Bethany Congregational Church for just $25/month until the school closed a yr later due to dilapidation.
She took a year off to travel throughout Europe and upon her return to to America, published “The Right Thing to Do—To Say—To Wear.” (1941)
In her interview to the CBS broadcast, Wings Over Jordan, she shared from her speech, “The Negro and the Social Graces” her concern for the rejection of proper etiquette displayed by blacks in forms of politeness, fine manners, and social graces as being solely associated with the slavery-time performances of the maid and the butler.
She did not want to see the honor and dignity associated with Black people dissipate.
Dr. Brown received her honorary doctorate from Howard University, Tuskeegee University, as well as a few unrecorded others. Following her passing away in 1962, the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum is housed in the Palmer Memorial Institute building.
