2026 will be bringing a lot of change for me and

🐛 It's taken me a really long time to work on what I want to bring to this industry.
ðŸĶ‹ How I want to help heal it
🐎 How I want to help progress it forward
🌚 And most importantly, what I bring to the table with my 17 years of experiences, accomplishments, failures & connections.

Consulting is not getting replaced. I'm just over here elevating my offerings to soon include Reiki (for pets, their people, & the caretakers of vet med)

Website, booking and information coming soon!

Dear Santa,
My list is very simple this year. Our industry is in desperate need of change, and I know you can help me with this. Here are just a few of my requests for the veterinary industry.
What do you think?
Sincerely,
Dr. Kim Podlecki/ RENEW Veterinary Consulting

Raise your hand if you have a love/hate relationship with this time of year 🙋‍♀ïļ

🎄 I love the holidays and festivities
🎉 I love the concept of a new year & new beginnings
🙁 I hate the stress & constant worry about $$ and health

Make sure you're doing these small things to make this time of year easier on your body

When stress and chaos are at an all time high, digging in to routine and wellness are often what your body needs to stay grounded

Now is also a great time to plan ahead and schedule work with next year!

The end of 2025 is upon us (honestly, thank goodness - let's turn over a new leaf)

And with that comes the age old arguments around end-of-the-year bonuses

Recently there was a discussion in one of my FB groups about how much owners/managers gift - some owners commenting that others were too generous (⁉ïļ) - while many others actually admitted to telling (no threatening) their employees that bonuses will be reduced for "poor behavior".

Wow

Do I think it's appropriate to make some type of fair, consistent sliding scale based on seniority, hours worked & annual reviews?
Yes
Do I think managers & owners should just arbitrarily assign an amount and call it a day?
No
Do I think employees should be bullied into "good behavior"
Absolutely not

If you're not doing reviews and tracking hours to help with this - step one is to start that in 2026

But really in the end, showing your team that you appreciate them, acknowledge their hard work, and know the clinic could not stand without them is the most important. 🎁

Going into 2026:
Bullying & favoritism are so out
Fairness, acknowledgment & support are so in

I'm shocked that in 2025, this is still a thing! You mean to tell me there's still managers out there who won't approve PTO unless the employee finds their own coverage?!

ðŸĪŊ

The PTO/vacation time protocols should be clear cut and simple.
✅ïļ How/where to request
✅ïļ When you need to put a request in
✅ïļ Whom to put the request into
✅ïļ When the approval will be posted

Managers - QUIT ASKING EMPLOYEES WHY THEY'RE REQUESTING OFF!
Respectfully, it's none of your business.
As long as they're following proper protocol ðŸĪ

If your request protocol needs updating - is here to help!

Part two!

The simplest thing you can do to get your chaotic schedule under control, help improve your staff's morale & health, improve patient care & client communication is....(drum roll...)

COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR STAFF!!! 🙌

You absolutely need to be engaging your current staff in the discussion of what their daily/hourly/weekly/monthly limits & boundaries are as related to the appointment schedule

Tracking how many walk-in "clients" are actually regulars - tracking if they come back - tracking what the average single transaction is for these clients - etc - helps to put in black & white if these are even worth it.
If so, at what cost & how many a day/week/month

Saying yes 100% of the time and no 0% of the time is not a flex. It shows that your staff's wellbeing comes second to a quick buck

Every clinic will be different. But if you find your hospital is struggling with this - QUIT seeking help with consultants who only know numbers and spreadsheets.
Work with a veterinarian who actually understands how to adjust the schedule to meet your needs and has seen/worked it all.

🙀 You wanna know an unpopular opinion that may SHOCK & SCARE a lot of people in this industry?...I know a big reason why many clinics suffer from massive burnout & turnover rates (from assistants up to doctors)...

🔊 It's your appointment schedule!

ðŸŽŊ Trust me when I say that regularly booking 20min appointments, AND walk-ins, AND drop-offs, AND boarding exams, is THE recipe for burnout & a high turnover rate.

Being the clinic that always says yes isn't a flex.
💊 Being the clinic that respects boundaries is.

🚂 Now I know that some days start out great & go off the rails. That's medicine.
But when you're purposely spreading everyone and everything thin, it will backfire.

ðŸšŦ Just because the staff "can" get through that many appointments, doesn't mean they should.

Not sure what to do next? Or questioning if this is your clinic?...stay tuned for part 2!

ðŸĶ‍⮛ The only way forward - as an individual, as an industry, as a nation - is to acknowledge our past. Acknowledge that the way you know, what you may have been taught, & what may be popular may not be truth. May not be light. May not be comfortable.

🌚 Acknowledge these truths and grow from them. Hiding, erasing & changing these truths to fit a narrative will never promote healing, growth & maturity.

ðŸĶ‹ Today, I acknowledge that while our industry has embraced the role of women as it's majority, we have yet to embrace women in rolls of power as the majority.

ðŸŠķ I acknowledge that I work in an industry grossly underrepresented by BIPOC individuals & LGBTQ+ individuals. I acknowledge my own struggle with how to shift this needle of change.

🍂 What I do know is that I want the truth to always persevere. So that we can collectively learn from these dark times on our journey to being better.
