I know Facebook has been under fire recently for not protecting users' privacy, but sometimes it does wonderful things, too. I received a private message, but it wasn't from a name I recognized. Nevertheless, I opened it and read it and found a message that just made my day. There was a copy of a newspaper clipping from 1991 that displayed one of the hundreds & hundreds of photos I took on the streets of Jersey City over the years. So often we go along in life, not knowing whether what we do really matters to anyone. And then someone takes the time to send a message like this. Thank you, Angel Machado, for reminding me that often it's the littlest things we do that mean the most. Here is his note and the photo. "I know you did so much work but I just want to thank you for a small piece you did for me in the Jersey Journal back in 1991 when I graduated from kindergarten. You took a photo of me, my sister and a friend when we were standing in front of a grocery store on Palisade Ave in Jersey City. I still laugh about it to this day. It's just the little things people like you do that hold a life time of memories. Thanks again. Happy to see your hard work paid off."

Heard a fascinating interview on "Fresh Air" yesterday with photographer Joel Sartore, a contributor to National Geographic. He is in the middle of a 25-year project to document animals in captivity around the world. Many of these animals are the last examples of their species in existence. He photographs them with studio lighting -- the type used in fine art portraiture. From insects to elephants -- their faces are amazing. Samples of Sartore's work can be seen via this link: http://www.npr.org/2017/02/27/517481473/photographer-builds-a-photo-ark-for-6-500-animal-species-and-counting.

National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore is on a mission to document every captive animal species in the world. He talks about getting an arctic fox to hold still, and Photoshopping out p**p.

I'm so delighted to hear that one of my clients, Carol Morrissette of Residential Design Studio, is featured on BuildDirect.com’s blog as one of Portland’s 15 Best Architects! I've had the chance to photograph a couple of her home renovation projects, and I'd say the honor is well deserved. Kudos, Carol!

Deeply saddened today to learn of the passing of my client Dan Link, who lost his battle with cancer. He ran several successful businesses over the course of his career, most recently working as a home inspector. He was also a gifted magician, and could often be found entertaining people on Congress St. in Portland during First Friday Art Walks. He was a decent man with a good sense of humor, and I will miss him.

The staff at Lighthouse Foot & Ankle warned me that they don't like having their pictures taken, but in the end they proved to be "wild and crazy" and a lot of fun to work with.

Wondering what to do for dinner tonight? If you're in the Portland area, stop by Otto's Pizza on Munjoy Hill (225 Congress St.). They're having a benefit night for Port Resources, which will receive 8% of all pizza sales, either eat-in or take-out. If you order take-out by phone, tell Otto's that you are supporting Port Resources. The attached slide show will give you an overview of what Port Resources does in working with the developmentally disabled. http://youtu.be/oyXP4IcokbM

Today I learned that early this morning one of my clients lost his battle with cancer. Last month I got the opportunity to document his 48th wedding anniversary with his wife, Diane Oakes Jandreau, at the home of their daughter, Hydie Jandreau Knuckles. Rest in peace, Niles Jandreau. A fine gentleman.

CLASSIC EYEWEAR by Kathleen Kelly Photo

Fridays in my youth were when everyone had fish for dinner, so it's appropriate today to feature my Classic Eyewear model Kathleen Alfiero, whose family owns Harbor Fish Market in Portland. She posed outside the store for me in frames by Scojo and sunglasses by Oliver Peoples.
