The fall bug that wants inside.

As September arrives and temperatures begin to change, you may notice stink bugs gathering around your home's exterior.

They often show up around sunny walls, windows, doors and other sheltered areas.

Why?

Stink bugs can seek protected places as the seasons change, and gaps around the exterior of a home can provide potential access.

Before fall gets further underway, take a quick look around your home:

• Check window and door frames.
• Inspect exterior cracks and gaps.
• Look around sunny exterior walls.
• Check areas around vents and utility openings.
• Repair damaged screens and seals where needed.

And if you start finding stink bugs inside, don't simply focus on the ones you can see.

The better question is:

How are they getting in?

Routines are back. So are the pests.

As temperatures begin to drop, rodents may start looking for warm, protected places to shelter. Roaches and spiders can also become more noticeable as homes provide food, moisture and shelter.

September is the perfect time for a home pest reset.

Before fall pest activity picks up, check:

• Gaps around doors and windows
• Foundation cracks and openings
• Garage entry points
• Areas around pipes and utility lines
• Attics, basements and other sheltered spaces
• Signs of droppings, gnawing or recurring insect activity

Don't wait until pests have already settled in.

Spider Season Is Here: Why Are You Seeing More Spiders in Your Home This Fall?

As temperatures drop across Westchester, spiders and other pests start looking for warmth, shelter, and reliable food sources. That can mean more spiders showing up around windows, basements, garages, and other quiet areas of your home.

But spiders may not be the only pests trying to get inside.

Fall also brings increased activity from rodents and roaches as they search for shelter before winter.

Before pests settle in, check:

• Foundation cracks and gaps
• Doors and window frames
• Basements and crawl spaces
• Garages and sheds
• Areas around pipes and utility openings

Late-summer ant problem? Start your inspection outside.

If you're suddenly seeing more ants around your Westchester home, don't only check the kitchen.

Walk around the exterior and look at these 5 spots:

1. Foundation
Check along foundation edges, especially where ants may find small gaps or entry points.

2. Patio & Pavers
Look between pavers and along cracks where ants may travel or establish nests.

3. Mulch & Landscaping
Ants can use protected areas beneath mulch, stones and landscaping materials.

4. Cracks & Gaps
Check around steps, doors, exterior walls and other potential entry points.

5. Outdoor Furniture
Inspect underneath patio tables, chairs and other areas that provide shelter.

Seeing a few ants outdoors doesn't automatically mean you have an infestation.

But if you notice repeated trails, large numbers of ants, or ants consistently entering your home, it's worth investigating where they're coming from.

Why are ants carrying their dead across your driveway?

If you've ever seen ants carrying what looks like another ant, you may have wondered what they're doing.

It's actually part of an important colony behavior.

Worker ants can remove dead ants and other waste from the nest and move it away from areas where the colony lives.

So if you see ants carrying dead ants along a driveway, sidewalk or patio, you're getting a small glimpse into the activity happening around the colony.

But don't assume that one trail automatically means you have an infestation.

Instead, look at the bigger picture:

• Are ants repeatedly following the same trail?
• Are they disappearing into cracks or landscaping?
• Are you seeing large numbers around your foundation?
• Are ants also appearing inside your home?

Persistent activity can be a reason to investigate where the ants are coming from and what may be attracting them.

Is Your Westchester Backyard Serving Rats a Free Buffet?

Rats don't need much to keep coming back. Your outdoor food sources could be giving them an easy meal right outside your door.

Check these 5 common attractors:
✅Food scraps from BBQs and outdoor meals
✅Open or overflowing garbage cans
✅Pet food left outside
✅Birdseed scattered around feeders
✅Uncovered compost

After your next backyard gathering, clean up food scraps, secure your trash, bring pet food indoors, and keep compost properly covered.

If you're already seeing rats, droppings, or signs of rodent activity, don't wait for them to move closer to your home.

C&E Pest Management can inspect your property, identify potential attractants and entry points, and help address rodent activity.

Limited August openings are available in Yonkers and Mount Vernon. Schedule before the back-to-school rush.

Back to school. Back to snacks. Could your kitchen be attracting rodents?

As school routines return, kitchens can suddenly become much busier.

Lunch bags come home. Snack packages get opened. Crumbs end up under the table. Pantry doors get left open. And every once in a while, a forgotten piece of food disappears underneath an appliance.

For a mouse, those small food sources can be an opportunity.

Before the school-year routine gets too busy, give your kitchen a quick pest-prevention check:

• Clean crumbs under tables and appliances.
• Store cereal, crackers and snacks in sealed containers.
• Don't leave food in backpacks or lunch bags overnight.
• Wipe up spills and food residue promptly.
• Keep pantry shelves organized and check for damaged food packaging.
• Empty indoor garbage regularly.

And don't forget the bigger question:

How are rodents getting inside?

If you're finding droppings, damaged food packages, gnaw marks or repeated signs of rodent activity, cleaning the crumbs won't solve the underlying problem.
