The Schoharie Fire Department has become one that is aggressive, yet well trained, with firematic and administrative officers that are both optimistic and practical. Located in rural upstate New York thirty miles south-west of the State's Capital, Albany, our district covers about twenty-seven square miles of diverse terrain. Schoharie river valley, we run five fire apparatuses out of one station with a volunteer staff of about forty members. The Schoharie Fire Department averages 240 calls per year, providing fire, EMS, rescue, and fire police services to our district. We have developed great partnerships with our neighboring companies of Central Bridge, Esperance, Gallupville & Middleburgh, resulting in the establishment of mutual aid contracts. Some of our newer members were fortunate earlier this week to have a little bit of a local history lesson. While responding to an alarm activation at the Old Stone Fort Museum & Schoharie County Historical Society, which is just up the road from our fire station, our members were able to see one of the oldest fire engines in the United States… And it’s on exhibit at the museum! Not by coincidence, this pumper has been on our fire department letterhead for decades.

So, if you were following our page and are looking for some history, we definitely encourage you to check out the museum. At the same time, if you are looking to make history, consider joining our fire department. We’ve been protecting our community since 1832… and would love to add you to our member roster.

One call, two call, three call, four,
Hear our fire trucks roar some more!

It’s 6 PM on Monday… And our members have already responded to four emergency calls for assistance. And later tonight, some of our members are taking their emergency medical technician (EMT) training class.

Not too shabby!

This is where you can step in. Our members train to respond to many different types of emergencies. In addition, we support many local organizations and community events. And we are always looking for folks like you, that have a few extra hours each month and the drive to help make our community better. SEARCH AND RESCUE DRILL

On the evening of Wednesday, August 19, members of worked alongside members of the Schoharie County Technical Rescue Team in learning more about high angle rope rescue. In this specific training scenario, our “patient“ fell off a 20 foot cliff, landing on a rock ledge with severe injuries.. It was a difficult and dangerous location to work in, but the volunteer crews successfully used their rope rescue systems to climb down and reach the patient, administer first aid, and hoist the patient back up to the top of the cliff in a rescue basket.

Special, thank you to the specialty rescue team for taking time to train with us and share their expertise.

This is a great example of one of the many real world situations that our department trains for. Given the number of mountains and cliffs within our area, this scenario is very realistic.

We are always looking for a few extra hands and volunteers that are looking to help protect our community. Volunteering is a great way to pitch in and make a huge difference. In the early morning of Thursday, August 13, our fire department along with the assistance of mutual mutual aid fire companies and EMS organizations rolled to a structure fire located on Terrace Mountain Road.

Late last night, Monday August 17, our fire department responded to a property damage automobile accident with a vehicle located on its side near the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Prospect Street.

Fire trucks do not drive themselves. Fire hoses aren’t deployed by themselves. Emergency equipment doesn’t get used by itself. It all requires people. This is where you come in. Your neighbors need your help during emergencies. Our fire department also needs people like you who are willing to learn some new skills, train with our members, and then put your skills into action. Just in case you haven’t read either of our two local newspapers, Times Journal SchoCo or The Mountain Eagle & Schoharie News,we’ve got some good news to share!

The Schoharie Fire Department was recently awarded $18,300 through the FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. The primary goal AFG is to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire-related hazards.

With the grant, purchased a battery-powered mechanical chest compression system. This tool delivers consistent, high-quality CPR to cardiac arrest patients, allowing emergency responders to maintain continuous compressions while reducing rescuer fatigue and improving operational safety. Shown in the picture is the device along with Fire Chief John Borst, along with Schoharie Village Mayor Colleen Henry and the Village board of trustees.

Being 100% honest….our dept is lucky to have really good people. Like….really really good. And every month it’s difficult for us to pick some members of the month that continue to be positive, participate in trainings and attend emergency calls, and stand out a little bit more. This month we want to say thanks to Stefanie and Nikki for being THAT. person.

If you’re looking to the THAT person that goes out of their way to help people in times when they need help, consider volunteering with us. We could definitely use your help. Your community could definitely use your help Man…what a feeling!

Schoharie Fire Press Release

On the late morning of Sun-Aug-02, Schoharie fire dept was toned out to a structure fire on State Route 30 in the Town of Schoharie. apparatus rolled to the scene to begin fire attack. Due to the size of the fire, its quick growth and knowing there were no occupants inside the building, defensive operations were started and numerous other departments were called in for assistance.

A huge thank you to our county 911 dispatch team that helped direct resources needed to protect life and property and ensure that everyone went home to their families. Thanks to all law enforcement and EMS agencies that assisted, as well as our county fire coordinators and fire investigation team. One of the many tools that we use is a mobile app called I am responding, IaR. It serves many purposes – relays 911 call information to our members, maps all of the fire hydrants in our district and helps track required equipment servicing and dept events.

This picture is of our events this next month. As you can see… we offer a lot of opportunity for our members, whether it’s weekly in-house training, training with our county specialty teams, or supporting local organizations like our Library and Lexington ARC.

If you’d like to learn more about all of the different ways we get involved with our community and also helped protect our community, come on down to our fire station on one of our training nights. County OES has sent out a rain event notice. The national weather service predicts the Schoharie creek at Breakabeen to crest Thurs morning at a creek gauge height of 13-ft and a water flow of 21K CFS

For reference, Dec-25-2020 Breakabeen data was 16-ft and 47K CFS. We had minor flooding in the village on lower Hilgert and lower Bridge Street. It’s one thing to see a weather forecast, but it’s better to have historical data to compare it to.

If the forecast holds, we won’t hit the 2020 numbers.

But in the meantime, you know the routine… Don’t go out unless necessary, stay out of low lying areas, and if you need assistance call 911.
