⚠️ MEASLES AWARENESS: What Schoharie County Residents Should Know ⚠️

Measles cases have been confirmed in nearby counties, including neighboring Otsego County. The confirmed cases involved people who were not vaccinated.

There are currently no confirmed cases in Schoharie County. Because measles spreads very easily, the Schoharie County Department of Health is closely monitoring the situation, staying informed, and will notify the public as more information becomes available.

🔎 KNOW THE FACTS

Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain in the air for up to 2 hours after the person leaves.

Symptoms may appear 7–21 days after exposure. A person can spread measles 4 days before and 4 days after the rash appears, before they know they are sick.

Measles can cause pneumonia, brain swelling, hospitalization, and death.

💉 Vaccination is the best protection.

The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella. Two recommended doses protect most people and help protect babies too young to be routinely vaccinated and people who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons.

📆 Recommended MMR schedule:
Infants 6-11 months: An early dose may be recommended during an outbreak or before international travel. It does not replace the 2 routine doses after age 1.
Children: First dose at 12-15 months; second dose at 4-6 years. The second dose may be given earlier if it is at least 28 days after the first.

Older children and teens: Anyone without 2 doses should get caught up, with doses at least 28 days apart.

Adults: Healthcare workers, international travelers, college students and people exposed during an outbreak may need vaccination. Talk with a healthcare provider about whether you need 1 or 2 doses.

Pregnant people and people with certain immune conditions: MMR is generally not recommended. Talk with a healthcare provider about vaccination options.

If you may have been exposed and are not fully vaccinated, contact your healthcare provider or local health department as soon as possible. An MMR dose within 72 hours may prevent measles or reduce its severity. Immune globulin may be recommended within 6 days, especially for infants, pregnant people and those with weakened immune systems. Do not wait for symptoms.

Check your vaccination records now. If you think you were exposed or have symptoms, call your healthcare provider before going in to help protect others.

Reliable transportation can make a big difference for families and helps ensure children can access the services they need. If you're looking for meaningful part-time work while making a difference in your community, this may be a great opportunity!

🚒🚑 Our Third Annual Project Rescue Summer Camp was another incredible success! 🚨❤️

This week, campers had the opportunity to step into the world of emergency services through hands-on learning, live demonstrations, and interactive activities led by local first responders.

Throughout the week, participants learned lifesaving skills such as First Aid, AED use, and CPR (earning their CPR certification!), explored emergency response careers, and met professionals from fire, EMS, law enforcement, Search & Rescue, dispatch, LifeNet, K-9 teams, drone operations, and more. They also experienced exciting demonstrations, including the Jaws of Life, accelerant detection K-9s, and emergency communications, while learning how these agencies work together to keep our communities safe.

Of course, it wasn't all work! Campers also enjoyed swimming, games, ice cream, and plenty of opportunities to make new friends while building confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills.

A huge thank you to all of our incredible partners and presenters who dedicated their time to inspiring the next generation of emergency responders. Your passion and commitment made this week one these campers will never forget.

We're so proud of each camper for their enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to learn. We can't wait to see what the future holds for these young leaders, and we're already looking forward to Project Rescue Summer Camp 2027! 👏🏻

👨‍👩‍👦 We strongly encourage you to bring your child with you! A complete car seat check includes making sure the seat fits your child, not just your vehicle. Every child is different, and a proper fit is one of the most important parts of keeping them safe.

Can't bring your child? You're still welcome to stop by! We'll gladly inspect your car seat installation and answer your questions. We just won't be able to assess how the seat fits your child.

🦠 Know the Facts About Cryptosporidiosis (Crypto)

The New York State Department of Health is reminding New Yorkers to take steps to prevent cryptosporidiosis (Crypto), an intestinal illness caused by a microscopic parasite known as Cyclospora. Crypto is one of the leading causes of waterborne illness in the United States and can spread easily through contaminated water, food, infected people, or infected animals. It can even survive in properly chlorinated swimming pools for long periods of time.

‼️ Symptoms may include:
• Watery diarrhea
• Stomach cramps
• Nausea or vomiting
• Fever
• Dehydration

Symptoms usually begin 2 to10 days after exposure and often last 1 to 2 weeks.

🛡️ Protect yourself and others by:
• Thoroughly washing all fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
• Cook your food when you can. Heating food to 158°F (70°C) or higher kills Cyclospora.
• Washing your hands with soap and water—alcohol-based hand sanitizer does not effectively kill Crypto.
• Avoiding swallowing water while swimming in pools, lakes, rivers, or splash areas.
• Drinking safe, treated water when camping or hiking.
• If you have diarrhea, stay out of pools for 2 weeks after your symptoms have completely stopped to help prevent spreading the parasite.

Anyone can get Crypto, but young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to become seriously ill. If you have severe diarrhea, signs of dehydration, or symptoms that do not improve, contact your healthcare provider.
