AgXplore Welcomes Josh Powell as Kentucky Sales Agronomist

Josh brings 23 years of experience in agricultural sales and crop production, with a background spanning liquid fertilizer, seed, row crops, and turfgrass. Throughout his career, he has built strong relationships while helping customers make informed decisions for their operations.

A University of Kentucky graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Plant and Soil Science, Josh brings a combination of agronomic knowledge and hands-on industry experience to the AgXplore team.

In his new role, Josh looks forward to building relationships across Kentucky and supporting our channel partners and the growers they serve.

Outside of agriculture, Josh enjoys spending time with his wife, Jessica, their two children, Lexie and JP, and time at the lake.

R5 and R6 are all about filling pods and developing seed.

But how do you know when your soybeans have actually reached R5? Dr. John Murphy shows exactly where to look on the plant, which pod to pull, and how developing seed helps identify the stage.

Knowing the stage is the first step. Understanding what the crop needs during it is where the agronomy gets interesting.

At R5, soybean pod fill is being supported from two directions at once.

Dr. John Murphy explains how nutrients are being remobilized from the leaves and stems while the roots continue supplying the developing pods. Water, potassium, sulfur, and zinc all become part of that conversation.

It’s a great example of why decisions made early in the season can still matter when the crop is finishing yield.

R4 is when soybean pods are becoming easier to see, but yield potential is still vulnerable.

Disease, insect pressure, nutrient limitations, and other plant stresses can contribute to flower and small-pod abortion during these reproductive stages.

Knowing the R stage is only the start. The bigger question is: what could stress be costing the plant right now?
