Spot welding is vital for automotive manufacturing, but electrode wear and timing issues mean quality testing is non-negotiable.

Traditional destructive peel testing is time consuming, expensive, wasteful, and destroys good parts.

Enter Manual Ultrasonic Testing:

The gold standard for non-destructive inspection. The portable Dakota FX71-DL allows operators to inspect spot welds right on the factory floor.
โœ… Advanced Unit: Built for tough factory environments.
โœ… Specialist Transducer: Operates at 15โ€“20 MHz.
โœ… Precision Setup: Uses a captive water delay line matched to the spot weld diameter for optimal accuracy.

Upgrade from destructive teardowns to precise ultrasonic testing to safeguard weld integrity and eliminate waste.

Is your inspection data working as hard as you are, or is it just creating more work?

When thickness readings and flaw records are scattered across fragmented systems, your team spends more time cleaning, hunting, and verifying data than actually using it to ensure structural integrity. DakMasterโ„ข was engineered to end this cycle of manual work and siloed insights, providing the architecture you need to centralise your ecosystem and ensure your inspection data is always accurate, secure, and ready for action.

By pairing the advanced ultrasonic testing capabilities of the Dakota FX71-DL Flaw Detector with the intelligent architecture of DakMasterโ„ข, you gain a complete, end-to-end data pipeline:
โœ… Seamless Data Capture: Instantly transfer critical A-scan, B-scan, and flaw detection readings directly from your Dakota FX71-DL into the DakMasterโ„ข ecosystem.
โœ… Centralised Integrity: Eliminate manual entry errors and missing paperwork. Every defect measurement and thickness check is automatically logged, validated, and mapped to your specific assets.
โœ… Real-Time Analytics: Turn raw inspection data into actionable reports, sizing analysis, and predictive maintenance schedules without the manual heavy lifting.
โœ… Enterprise-Grade Compliance: Ensure your flaw records, calibration logs, and inspection histories are secure, fully searchable, and audit-ready at all times.

Whether you are evaluating critical welds, complex pipelines, or aerospace components, this integration gives you the "Single Source of Truth" you need to optimise your maintenance strategy, verify safety margins, and reduce costly downtime.

Ready to streamline your NDT inspection process?

NDT Tech Tip: Finding and Setting the Probe Index Point

Accuracy in ultrasonic testing starts at the source. If your probe index point is off, your defect sizing and positioning will be too.

Here is a quick refresher on how to calculate the probe index point using a V1 or V2 calibration block, and how to calibrate it in modern flaw detectors like the Dakota FX71-DL & FX81-DL.

What is the Probe Index Point?

The probe index point is the exact location on the transducer shoe where the ultrasonic pulse transmits from. An accurate index point is critical for:
โœ… Correctly recording the position of indications.
โœ… Measuring the true beam angle in subsequent calibration steps.

Step-by-Step Procedure
โœ… Enable Peak Hold: Turn on Peak Hold mode (envelope) on your instrument to hold the highest amplitude peak within a region.
โœ… Scan the Block: Line the transducer up parallel to the V1 or V2 block and move it backwards and forwards slowly until you build the full envelope around the peak using the block's index markers.
โœ… Peak the Signal: Adjust the position to move the active echo signal to the absolute centre of the envelope when amplitude reaches its maximum.
โœ… Mark and Protect: The position indicated by the central line of the index marker is your transducerโ€™s index point.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Many inspectors mark this position with a permanent pen and cover it with clear nail polish so it doesn't wash away from couplant contact!

Configuring X-Offset in the Dakota FX71-DL & FX81-DL

Instead of measuring from the middle of the probe every time, you can adjust the software to measure from the front:
โœ… Navigate to the TRIG controls.
โœ… Locate the X-OFFSET setting.
โœ… Measure the physical distance from your newly established index point to the front of the transducer.
โœ… Enter that measurement into the field.

Once set, all along-the-top distance measurements will automatically reference the very front of the transducer.

How to choose the right flaw detector for you!

Looking for a powerful flaw detector to elevate your inspections? Dakota offers two top contenders: the Dakota FX71-DL handheld flaw detector and the Dakota FX81-DL benchtop flaw detector.

But which one is right for you?

Here's a breakdown to help you decide:
โœ… ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐š๐›๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ: The Dakota FX71-DL is the clear winner here. Its compact size makes it ideal for on-site inspections and tight spaces.
โœ… ๐€๐๐ฏ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ ๐…๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ: The Dakota FX81-DL packs a punch with a larger display, more extensive data storage (external SD slot which allows up to 64Gb vs. Dakota FX71-DL's 4Gb), and advanced flaw sizing tools.
โœ… ๐€๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ: Choose the Dakota FX71-DL for versatility in field inspections of welds, pipes, and other structures. The Dakota FX81-DL excels in industrial and lab environments with demanding applications requiring in-depth data analysis. The Dakota FX81-DL can also be seamlessly integrated into your automated inspection system!

Both offer exceptional flaw detection and thickness gauging, along with user-friendly controls. The key lies in your inspection environment and specific needs.
