Disrespect does not become less harmful because someone is “just direct,” “under pressure,” or “a high performer.”
When poor behavior keeps getting explained away, the team notices more than the behavior.
They notice the protection around it.
They learn whose tone gets excused, whose impact gets overlooked, and what the culture is willing to absorb.
That is how incivility becomes normalized.
Leaders, you can value someone’s contribution and still name the behavior that cannot continue.
Because culture is shaped by what gets corrected — and what gets protected.
