It’s hard to believe that it’s already June. But you’d better believe it’s time for another edition of Car Connections! It’s been nearly a year since we last drove a sixth-generation Toyota4Runner. Nothing major has changed for the 2026 model year, but the TRD Off-Road Premium model we test here brought certain things about the 4Runner into sharper focus.

Even though the sixth-generation 4Runner has been out for a while, it’s hard to ignore just how much a departure it is from the previous version of the off-roader. After a production run of 15 years, everything — the platform and bodywork, engine and transmission, and interior tech and trim levels — has (finally!) been updated.

Nothing major changed on the Toyota 4Runner for 2026, but the TRD Off-Road Premium model we tested brought certain things into sharper focus.

Route 66 was officially commissioned on November 11, 1926, and in light of the 100-year anniversary, there are celebrations of “The Mother Road” going on throughout the year. One of the many things that made Route 66 memorable was the effect that it had on hospitality and tourism. America’s love for the automobile brought about some unique lodging that included accommodations for vehicles just like those for people. Some motor courts offered an individual garage for each cabin or motel room.

Motor courts offered cozy accommodations not just for humans, but also for the cars making the journey across Route 66.
