Wading Through The Unexpected…

Have you ever had expectations that weren’t entirely met?

Last week, while visiting the beautiful country of Ireland, I signed myself up for horseback riding on the beach.

An avid rider, I was looking forward to my first time riding on the beach. I envisioned myself galloping at a high speed, feeling the rush of adrenaline—slightly terrified, mostly thrilled.

We set out, heading for the beach. When we arrived at the beach, I quickly realized it was high tide. No sand. Just knee-high water. Everywhere.

And so there we were…wading through the water.

My grand vision of galloping across the sandy beach was shattered.

However, the high tide slowed the ride down. And gave the opportunity for this photograph—a moment I will always remember.

It also made me think about all the times we plan, and the well-thought-out plan doesn’t go as envisioned.

Sure, there can be initial disappointment, but in those moments are also moments of unexpected opportunity.

So, I ask you, what do you do in moments that aren’t as expected?

Do you look for what those moments do provide, or do you focus on the disappointment and ask, “why me.”

The choice is yours…

Leadership isn’t about holding a title—it’s about building legacy through people and purpose.

It was a wonderful opportunity to lead and speak at the inaugural 2025 Medical Family Therapy Intensive, sponsored by the Family Therapists in Healthcare Settings Topical Interest Network (TIN) of the American Association of Marriage and Therapists. 🎙️🧠

Over the past five years, I have been honored to lead this Topical Interest Network.

As chair and now past-chair, I have known that staying grounded in the TIN’s mission is key to:

🔹 Growing membership
📚 Fostering education
📢 Promoting advocacy
🧩 Developing our workforce

I am proud to say that these goals have been steadily—though not perfectly—been accomplished.

Most importantly, they have not been achieved alone.

These accomplishments have required a dedicated team—individuals that:

🤝 Embrace the mission
🎯 Align on efforts
💪 Stay committed to the organization

Each colleague made our mission not only possible—but sustainable.

As I transitioned from chair to past-chair, and will soon be stepping-down as past-chair, I am grateful that each continued leader is:

✅ Competent
✅ Confident
✅ Prepared

The future is in good hands, and I can’t wait to see what’s to come.

If you're navigating a leadership transition, developing your team, or stepping into a new role, I’d love to support your journey.

💬 Let’s connect.
🎯 Let’s lead intentionally.
🏛️ Let’s build what outlasts us.

Hey, it’s me—the high achiever with a plan and solid dose of perfectionism…

By the age of 30:

🎓 PhD from a Top 20 University
🏥 Core faculty at a prestigious residency
💼 Launched physician wellness programs
📝 Published scholarly work

Then, as someone who is always in pursuit of a new challenge, it was time for a change.

In no way adverse to risk, I left the stable, pearly white, academic towers of medicine and joined a leadership team within a start-up company.

🔥 I was passionate
⚡ I was energized
💡 I believed in the mission

Things changed and they changed rapidly…I learned life outside of the ivory tower did not guarantee stability or lengthy tenure.

For the first time as a leader, I also began questioning myself. I had striven to be the best and to do the best, I had striven for perfection…yet my plan had gone awry.

This is when I became an entrepreneur and opened my psychotherapy practice:

🧭 Not part of the original plan
🤝 Leading looked different
🏆 No external accolades

However, I found myself again enhancing high-achievers well-being.

Through a holistic approach, I was working with executives, creatives, and elite athletes in improving their:

🧠 Mindset
❤️ Relationships
💪 Physical health

I was making a difference. And I wanted to make a greater impact.

That’s when I launched executive leadership consulting.

However, the dynamics of life were not in full alignment. And, I had to pause this launch.

I had to face my own limitations and accept that my attention needed to focus on alignment.

I have not been in hiding.

I have been focused on:

✅ Acceptance of my imperfections
✅ Acknowledgement of my limitations
✅ Alignment of my focus and efforts

I have not been alone in this process.

I have accomplished this in relationship with:

👩‍🏫 Mentors
🧑‍💼 Coaches
🤝 Friendships

One-year later, from a place of clarity and alignment, I could not be more fulfilled to relaunch as an executive leadership consultant.

🌟 If you’re a high-achiever who’s experienced the weight of perfectionism, disruption, or reinvention—know this:

You don’t have to navigate the next chapter alone.

Whether you’re seeking alignment, recalibration, or renewed purpose—I partner with leaders like you to deepen resilience, elevate impact, and lead from wholeness.

The surprising metric that predicts success (and it’s not IQ) is…emotional intelligence (EQ).

A leader with high EQ is better able to achieve organizational success than a leader with low EQ.

This is because a leader with high EQ is better able to:

✨ Communicate effectively
✨ Manage conflict
✨ Inspire others
✨ Develop a positive culture

So, what does this mean for leaders with low EQ?

Well, the good news is that EQ is not fixed.

EQ can be developed, refined, and strengthened–propelling leaders and their organizations to new heights.

Are you ready to unlock your EQ potential and lead your organization with greatness?

Why Effective Communication can be Hard to Achieve…

Most, if not all, organizational leaders understand the significance of effective communication on performance outcomes.

In fact, millions of leaders are trying to improve communication within their organizations by:

- Increasing frequency of communication
- Communicating across multiple modes
- Sending detailed and lengthy messages

Despite these efforts, performance continues to lag.

You see, if you want to foster effective communication these approaches will never get you there.

Perhaps you’ve even experienced the ineffectiveness of these communication approaches.

And you are thinking to yourself…

“That’s accurate, but what more can I do?”

Well…it’s not so much about “what more you can do.”

Rather, it’s about “how you can do it.”

You see, you owe it to yourself and your team members to approach communication in a way that truly seeks to:

- Lessen Miscommunication
- Provide Shared Understanding of Roles and Goals
- Quicken Ex*****on Time of Tasks

These are the components that truly spur performance and organizational sustainability.

Want to learn more about how to master these communication approaches?

Reach out. I’m here to help.

Many organizational leaders primarily focus on feeding their strengths.

Sure, knowing your strengths as a leader is important.

However, knowing your weaknesses is even more important…

Why?

Because knowing your weaknesses helps you to grow as a leader far more than knowing your strengths.

You see, recognizing and overcoming your weaknesses will support you in your journey to personal and professional development.

This process will also allow you to connect with your team members in supporting them in self-discovery and growth.

So, how does a leader begin to identify areas of weakness to overcome?

Well, it’s a process that takes:

✨ time
✨ humility
✨ and adaptability

The results…priceless.

You will:

✅ strengthen your leadership approach.
✅ positively influence your team members.
✅ propel your business to new heights.

Are you ready to uncover and overcome your weaknesses as a leader?

If so, let’s discuss this transformative process. It will be worth your time.
