Please thank Az. Senator Gail Griffin for sponsoring SB 1197, whcih would require elementary schools to include cursive writing as part of the teaching curriculum. Students would be expected to legibly write in cursive by the end of fifth grade. It's about time that ALL students were able to learn this necessary skill.

For the past 20 years, schools have been continually de-emphasizing the teaching of cursive writing. If this continues, our children will be robbed of their ability to use a powerful tool of communication.

Time Magazine, October 20, 2014, Michael Scherer, writes "The Paperless Classroom is Coming".The national push to get a computer into each student's hands, without teaching how to also write with pen and pencil, could be the dumbing down of our children's education. Yes, I agree it would be ideal for each student to have a government sponsored laptop, tablet or smartphone. But why stop there? With an additional fifteen minutes each school day, our kids could easily learn to use both tools.
In the article, one parent stated that he could no longer help his son with homework because all the assignments were online. There are a myriad of reasons why it is important for kid's to learn cursive writing and it should be added to the school curriculum.
The country of Mexico stopped teaching cursive writing 22 years ago, but have discovered that their graduating students have lost jobs because they could not write or read handwriting. Mexico now has instituted cursive writing back into the primary education of second and third graders.
