This is what most people don’t see in architecture.

It’s not the finished photos.
It’s this.

Two people standing over a drawing,
working through a condition that only revealed itself in the field.

Because no matter how much you design, document, and coordinate…

existing buildings always have something to say.

And sometimes, it’s not what you expected.

In moments like this, the project doesn’t go off track.

It becomes clearer:
• what matters most
• what needs to adapt
• what has to hold

The difference between a smooth project and a difficult one isn’t avoiding these moments.

It’s how they’re handled when they happen.

With:
• collaboration
• clarity
• careful consideration

This is where projects are shaped.

Not just on paper
but in conversations like this.

Because in complex, adaptive work…

They’re not the exception.
They’re part of the process.

Curious…
Have you ever been part of a project where something unexpected led to a better outcome?

The most important decisions rarely happen at a desk.

They happen when there is space to think.

To step away.
To reset.
To reconnect with what actually matters.

This boathouse was designed as a family retreat.

A place to gather.
To slow down.
To be together in a way that everyday environments don’t always allow.

But at its core, it reflects something broader.

The role environment plays in clarity.

Inspiration doesn’t come from constant activity.

It comes from moments of pause.
From connection to place.
From time with people who ground you.

We often separate how we live from how we lead.

But the two are deeply connected.

Because the quality of our thinking, our decisions, and our leadership is shaped by the environments we return to.

Where you go to think matters just as much as where you go to work.

Most libraries were designed for a different era of learning.

An era when information was scarce, silence was expected, and rows of stacks defined the experience.

But the role of a college library is evolving.

Students now come to libraries not only for information, but to collaborate, meet, study together, and build community.

The environment has to evolve with that shift.

This concept for Keystone College’s Miller Library explored how the space could become less of a repository and more of a learning commons.

Not rows of desks.

A landscape of places to learn.

Some quiet.
Some collaborative.
All designed to support the way students actually work today.

Institutions often talk about innovation in terms of curriculum and technology.

But the spaces where learning happens shape behavior just as powerfully.

Because the future of learning isn’t just digital.

It’s deeply human.

Preservation safeguards assets. Activation leverages them.

Scranton’s Iron Furnaces are among the most important historic structures in the region.

They are protected. They are respected. They are recognized.

But protection alone does not generate connectivity, investment, or daily civic life.

These images, part of a broader Iron District Comprehensive Plan, illustrate how the furnaces can be reimagined to function as active civic infrastructure, strengthening the connection between Downtown and South Scranton through intentional public space and cultural programming.

This is not about altering history.

It is about integrating it into forward-looking economic strategy.

Cities do not compete on preservation alone.

They compete on how effectively they leverage what they already own.

Historic assets are not just monuments.

With the right strategy, they become catalysts.

“Not that my opinion matters…” 😄

One of our favorite moments from our weekly site walk at the Scranton Electric Building.

Jamie, Senior Superintendent for LR Costanzo, oversees construction on this project, and this week’s big debate was a small but important detail…which seal strip works best where two pieces of glass meet.

The truth is, great projects happen when everyone feels ownership and brings their perspective to the table.

Also…details matter more than you think.

Sometimes the most important design decision is what you choose to keep.

During our work with Gentex Corporation, the CEO shared a story.

On one of the exposed brick walls, faint yellow streaks remain embedded in the masonry, remnants of coatings once used when the building manufactured life preservers and protective gear, long after its early days as a silk mill.

He could have seen them as flaws.

Instead, he told us their history.

As a fifth-generation leader of the company, he understands that legacy is not something you treat casually. It is something you steward.

Together, we agreed that this was not an imperfection.

It was narrative.

We could have cleaned it.
We could have sealed it.
We could have erased it.

We didn’t.

Because architecture is not just about what you build.

It is about what you choose to carry forward.

The renovated workplace reflects where Gentex is going. Modernized interiors, upgraded systems, and environments built to support innovation and collaboration.

The brick, textured, layered, and authentic, reflects the generations that built the company’s foundation.

When leadership understands its own story, design becomes a strategic partner in expressing it. Space reinforces culture. Material becomes memory. Employees are reminded daily that the difference they make today becomes part of what endures tomorrow.

At Layer X, thoughtful renovation is about evolution built on legacy.

And when leadership and design move in the same direction, buildings do more than function.

They communicate.

Downtown revitalization doesn’t start with demolition.

It starts with belief.

This building in downtown Allentown was once a furniture store.

Solid. Underutilized. Outdated.

Today, it houses a technology company and stands as one of the more distinct commercial buildings in the city.

Not because it demands attention.
Because it earns it.

Adaptive reuse is not just sustainable.
It is strategic.

It preserves urban fabric.
It accelerates revitalization.
It signals confidence in a city’s future.

Allentown’s transformation didn’t happen overnight. It happened because individuals, public leaders, private developers, businesses, and institutions chose to reinvest rather than retreat.

This project was part of that larger story.

Growth in regions like the Lehigh Valley doesn’t always require expansion outward.

Sometimes it requires reimagining what already exists.

When this branch was presented to the board, it didn’t look like a traditional bank.

It was bold. Distinct. Forward-looking.

There was hesitation.

Should it be toned down?
Made safer?
More familiar?

To their credit, Fidelity Bank leadership chose courage over conformity.

They chose to build a branch that reflected their ambition and the future of the bank.

That decision became Fidelity's Signature "Swoosh" Branch.
Recognizable. Differentiated. Unmistakable in the market.

Since then, Fidelity has continued to grow and expand its regional footprint, strengthening its presence across Northeast Pennsylvania and beyond. Now, they are bringing their first Signature prototype branch to the Lehigh Valley, reinforcing their commitment to the region with a bold, distinctive presence.

Strong leadership.
Clear vision.
Strategic design.

When vision, brand, and building align, architecture becomes part of the growth strategy. The organizations that succeed are rarely the ones that blend in.

Historic relevance is a strategic decision, not an accident.

Most people see the finished result of a historic renovation. What they don’t see are the decisions required to align historic character with modern use.

Phase 3 of the Hopewell Museum renovation reflects that exact tension. As Layer X Principal, Wolfram Arendt, notes in the article, this phase focuses on making the museum perform for today’s visitors without losing the historic integrity.

Projects like this succeed because of the client's vision and three non-negotiables:

◆ Stewardship: A commitment to sustainability and preservation.
◆ Clarity of Purpose: Solving for today’s needs without losing yesterday’s soul.
◆ Technical Rigor: Bridging the gap between architectural heritage and modern performance.

We don’t design for recognition. We design to solve the right problems and deliver on our client's original vision. When those results are acknowledged, it reinforces the value of the work.

We're honored that this project for Fidelity Bank featuring Electric City Roasting Company received an AIA NEPA Honor Award of Excellence.
