Spring is in full swing now and fishing is too. Wade-fishing has been the key to catching trout using smaller top-waters, corkys, and soft plastics. Fish have been holding in back lakes over mud when temps are cool but as waters warm we see more solid trout using outside shorelines around marsh drains over sand/grass. For fishing from the boat we are mostly chasing redfish in super shallow back bays/lakes with mud/grass bottoms. April looks to be stellar and my favorite month of the year to wade with top-waters all day long for trophy trout. Capt Nick Dahlman

As we roll into August we are going to battle some of the hottest days of the year. Getting an early start on mid-bay oyster reefs is proving successful for trout focusing on shell humps in 2-3 feet of water. For wade-fishing we have been hitting shorelines adjacent to back lake drains with deeper guts containing sand/grass bottoms. Big schools of Black Drum have shown themselves on calm wind days and have made for some serious rod bending action. Summertime is here and the temps are hot but that hasn’t kept the fish from their daily feed. Trout catching has been good for the first few hours of daylight while Red-fishing has been spotty at best most likely due to lower than average water levels the past couple weeks. If Redfish is your virtue then wade-fishing is your best bet in skinny water tight to the shore. As is usual in the heat of Summer I recommend getting wet and wade-fishing to keep cool as well as catch better quality specks. But if you prefer to stay in the boat we shouldn’t have a problem getting on a quick trout bite on the many mid-bay oyster reefs all over San Antonio Bay. Wadefishing with lures has definitely been the best way to catch solid Speckled Trout and Redfish this Spring. High winds ripping from the North one day and then South the next have been the norm but the key to being consistent is following the signs. Active bait on the flats and a few slicks popping have kept our confidence to keep grinding until the fish are ready to feed. Smaller sized top-waters and Corky Softdines as well as a variety of soft plastics have done the trick. Water temps have been between 60-70 degrees and will only get warmer as we get into May. Wade Fishing has been very productive the past few weeks. From Corkys to top-waters take your pick. Most of the Trout and Reds are currently holding over shallow sand and grass with water temps around 70 degrees. The March Full Moon has kicked off the spawn and some Big Trout have been caught and released the past few days. November...Duck Season has started off with some solid hunts. Lots of widgeon and pintails have been hanging around and our best hunts have come following each cold front as new birds are pushing down to the coast. The fishing bite has also been good the past couple weeks surrounding these first few cold fronts as water temps haven't dropped too much yet and fish are still hungry. October fishing has been surreal. The passing of another cool front earlier this week has fish on the prowl and they are hungry! Water temps dipped to the low 60's at sunrise the past few mornings and concentrated schools of fish near deeper marsh drains adjacent to grass flats and they were easy pickings on outgoing tides. We should see this pattern continue as these early cool fronts make their way to the coastal bend. Live shrimp under corks is working best fishing from the boat and soft plastics/smaller top-waters are the ticket when wading. The past 3 days of fishing have been phenomenal. Our first cold front of October jumpstarted the fish into a feeding frenzy and near full limits of Trout and Redfish were hitting the deck. Today's post-frontal bite was the best as we caught and released over 20 keeper reds and 15 keeper Trout after getting our boat limit. These types of days are definitely not the norm but hopefully we can look forward to a few more like this as each cool front triggers the fish into ferocious feeds. Come see us at Bay Flats Lodge!
