Pivot Organizing LLC Valerie Green, owner of Pivot Organizing, is a professional organizer offering in-person services in the Seattle area and virtual services globally.

I set up organizing systems that make sense to you and help you stay organized long-term. My services include home and office organizing, downsizing and moves, and consulting on time management and leadership. Originally from New York City, I now live in Seattle, Washington with my husband and rescue dogs and enjoy fitness activities, cooking, and decorating my topiary llama. I believe organizing

can be a therapeutic self-care activity that really improves quality of life. I love helping people be thoughtful about what they have and why, and setting up structures and systems that help people stay organized long-term.

Why am I sharing an article about New Year’s resolutions at the beginning of February?

In the spirit of the holidays my latest Substack post is: "What to do with gifts you don't like and other gift organizing advice." I hope this can help manage some of the stressful aspects of the holidays. Enjoy, and happy almost 2026!

It’s that time of year when sometimes you’re left with gifts that you don’t think you want to keep, which is really hard, and a mess of gift wrapping items.

I'm excited to share that I was interviewed by Bloomberg for a couple of articles about Baby Boomers downsizing! Note that these gift links last for just 7 days starting 11/20/25.

Boomers Are Passing Down Fortunes — And Way, Way Too Much Stuff is a thoughtful piece about sociological reasons behind Baby Boomers' tendency to acquire things, and the complexities (emotional and practical) of passing those things along.

How to Not Drown Under All Your Parents’ Stuff gives practical suggestions for helping someone go through a Boomer parent's belongings.

After reading the articles I realized I had some more tips to share so wrote this article for my new(ish) substack: Downsizing for Baby Boomers.

I'm excited to share my latest Substack post about organizing shoes, which can be more challenging than it seems!

It’s really easy for shoes to become a storage challenge in people's homes.

I've been doing a lot of downsizing projects recently so I wanted to share my approach in case it can help others tackle this sometimes daunting challenge!

It’s easy for downsizing to feel negative, especially if it’s a forced process of getting rid of stuff due to a move. Even if it’s proactive (as in the practice of Swedish Death Cleaning) the focus on getting rid of things can maximize the sense of loss.

I really like this article as I don’t think one needs to simplify to be organized. The definition of being organized that I like is if you can find what you need in under 5 mins. The volume of stuff varies dramatically based on personal preference, and is okay if your home is safe and comfortable. I don’t even use the word clutter as I think it’s judgmental.

Blame my childhood, but I find it cozy and comforting to be surrounded by stuff.

Having routinely cluttered surfaces can make a home feel messy even when it's not, but clearing it is not as simple as it may appear. Digging into this with clients I've found there are many reasons it happens. Understanding the root cause is what can help you clear these areas, so thought I'd share my findings in this article - enjoy! https://www.pivotorganizing.com/articles/how-to-clear-chronic-clutter-zones

There’s at least one area in the home (sometimes multiple!) where items just pile up and it’s impossible to keep clear. When I analyze these areas with clients, there are a variety of distinct (and legitimate!) reasons why the items are there.

When I read articles about simple ways to get organized, and see them in my client’s homes, I have to laugh, as I anticipate a list of detailed and onerous sounding tasks that even I wouldn’t do. Check all the expiration dates on food items? Scan documents I want to keep? Not only does that soun...
