✨Small Business Saturday ✨

We’re reflecting on the gratitude we feel for the small businesses, creatives, and community members who continue to uplift our stories.

We’re grateful for Terrence Jeffrey Santos of Founder of .magazine and Board VP of .seattle whose presence in our community goes far beyond publishing.

Terrence (Kuya Jeff) has shown up consistently — interviewing our small business owners, mentoring creatives, supporting our FCS small business program as a Small Business Ambassador, Talipapa Planning Committee Adviser, and building connections that uplift Filipino/a/x stories across generations.

Through the support of the Small Business Resiliency Network (SBRN) Grant–Loan Program in a 2024 pilot program, he expanded the magazine’s reach nationwide covering and celebrating the stories, spirit, and success of Filipinotown communities from Las Vegas to DMV (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia). Filipinotown Magazine also released their very first Pride Issue, and published a second Seattle issue celebrating our 90th Anniversary at FCS

These are some photos of Kuya Jeff gathering stories — reminding us that representation is a collective effort, and our narratives are strongest when held with intention and care.

Thank you, , for continuing to amplify our voices.

📅 Celebrate with him and at the Pin@y Pride December 4th Filipinotown Magazine launch party at 6-9PM

History of the Filipino Community of Seattle (FCS) Small Business Program:

In the fall of 2023, FCS proudly hosted its 2nd palengke market event (Sept. 30 – Oct. 1) sponsored by the Small Business Resiliency Network (SBRN). The event was produced in collaboration with consultants from The Palengke National , and and community volunteers.

This two-day celebration brought together dozens of vendors, artists, and creatives in the Filipino Community Center and Kern-Veloria Plaza, continuing the tradition started in 2022.

The FCS Small Business program aims to collaborate with local artists, businesses and community organizers to uplift BIPOC creatives and entrepreneurs while strengthening community connections. These cultural market festivals serve to celebrate our culture, while being a platform for our vendors, and a gathering place for community.

Now, in 2025, we’re carrying that spirit forward at Talipapa Market this Friday & Saturday (10/3–10/4) at the Filipino Community of Seattle. Come shop, eat, and celebrate with us as we honor our collective journey and look ahead to even more milestones for our business program and our communities.

History of the Filipino Community of Seattle (FCS) Small Business Program:

On June 9, 2023, we had the honor of welcoming Nicole Ponseca —Filipina restaurant owner, author, and cultural advocate—for her book signing, and networking night at the Filipino Community of Seattle’s historic ballroom. The event, sponsored by the Small Business Resiliency Network (SBRN), encouraged discussion on food entrepreneurship.

Nicole Ponseca, NYC and now Miami restaurateur shared her story of how she became a food entrepreneur and what resources she used to get to where she is today. The talk followed a book signing of her cookbook, I AM A FILIPINO.

Our discussions on foodpreneurship marked a true milestone for our FCS Small Business Program – our very first book signing and networking night with Nicole! Nicole’s story reminds us how Filipino Americans continue to shape culture, business, and community and beyond.

As we celebrate Filipino American History Month, we reflect on moments like these—where food, entrepreneurship, and community come together to uplift our heritage and future. 🌺🇵🇭

History of the Filipino Community of Seattle (FCS) Small Business Program:

In 2022, the Filipino Community of Seattle (FCS) renewed its contract with the Small Business Resiliency Network (SBRN) and expanded our reach to support more entrepreneurs with technical assistance, grant applications, and business advising.
That same year, FCS proudly became a Washington State Microenterprise Association (WSMA) Entrepreneur Support Organization (ESO) partner, securing our first WSMA grant to continue into 2023.

Through this partnership, FCS expanded its small business support with new workshops and resources tailored for our community:
We researched and published our first Filipino/a/x Business Community Resource Directory — connecting entrepreneurs to each other and to critical tools for success.

From Feb. 22, 2023, we launched the Economic and Entrepreneurial Empowerment (E3) Networking & Elevator Speech Series in collaboration with consultant, Lou Vargas of NaFFAA PNW and FilAmFashionWeek, giving professionals a space to practice, connect, and grow. Later in the summer June 9, 2023, we hosted a book signing and networking night with Nicole Ponseca to discuss Food Entrepreneurship.

These programs marked the beginning of a new chapter—empowering our creatives, current and prospective small business owners not only with funding but with networks and knowledge. Learn more about our SBRN and WSMA programs here: https://www.filcommsea.org/sbrn

🌟 Performer Spotlight: Beau Dega

Beau Degas (pronounced bodega) is Seattle's premiere affordable clown. Known for her comedic performances and flawless natural makeup, Beau has entertained audiences in the PNW since 2018. Her mother describes her drag as, “nice” and “I like when you don’t have lipstick on your teeth.” She’s a Maxxinista, former hand model, and can type 40 words per minute—more when she’s not driving.

Follow to get a sneak peek of the joy she’s bringing to Talipapa!

History of the Filipino Community of Seattle (FCS) Small Business Program:

The Filipino Community of Seattle (FCS) Small Business Program reached historic milestones in 2022. That summer in June 2022, we finally celebrated the long-awaited ribbon cutting of the Filipino Community Village, long delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Soon after, we hosted our very first Palengke Market, sponsored by the Small Business Resiliency Network (SBRN) in September 2022.

The inaugural FCS Palengke event brought together 30+ small businesses and marked the first market held at both the historic Filipino Community Center Ballroom and the newly opened Kern-Veloria Plaza. With support from SBRN, we partnered with local artists and entrepreneur consultants to uplift our Filipino/a/x community, creatives, and small businesses still finding their way to recover after the pandemic.

Key collaborators included Jennifer Marie Johnson (Black Pinay) and Gracie Santos (Grayseas Pies), co-founders of The Palengke National, as well as Bennyroyce Royon—Filipino American director, choreographer, dancer, and cultural producer—who now serves as our Filipino Community of Seattle Program Director.

The Palengke became a powerful milestone for community, culture, and commerce. What began in 2022 has since grown into today’s Talipapa Market Cultural Festival, now held annually to kick off Filipino American History Month as we continue to support our creatives and small businesses.

Join us this weekend, October 3–4, to celebrate how far we’ve come—and to keep building the future, together: fcs-talipapa-2025.eventbrite.com

"Small Business Resiliency Network has helped over one hundred small businesses with technical assistance, marketing, and networking. In collaboration with The Palengke National, we started Filipino American History Month with The Palengke at FCS which featured over 30 small businesses." – FCS Annual Report 2022

History of the Filipino Community of Seattle (FCS) Small Business Program:

The need to respond to COVID-19 led to a recession throughout the world. King County, Washington was the epicenter of COVID-19 in the United States. The first known case occurred in King County, and the first large outbreak followed shortly thereafter.

According to the county's 2021 Revive And Thrive Recovery Plan, county employment levels were recovered nearly 100,000 jobs since April 2020, though there are still 70,000 fewer jobs compared to pre-COVID levels. To support equitable economic recovery, the state and county sought partnerships with community-based organizations in disproportionately impacted areas.

After the first round of COVID-19 relief grants, the need for small business support didn’t stop. In Fall 2021, the Filipino Community of Seattle renewed its contract with the Department of Commerce as part of the Small Business Resiliency Network (SBRN).

With renewed trust and partnership, FCS received additional funding through the Safe Start Fund, administered by Seattle Foundation and supported by public and private donors. This expanded our ability to provide direct technical assistance and outreach to historically marginalized small businesses, including BIPOC and LGBTQIA entrepreneurs.

📣 “As a collective, the SBRN has provided services in more than 20 languages, outreached to over one million community members, and supported more than 17,000 Washington state businesses...Together we hope to
reverse the lasting negative economic impacts resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and build stronger economic foundations across the state’s diverse small business community. The effects of the pandemic run deep and recovery will take time, especially for historically disadvantaged small businesses, entrepreneurs and
nonprofits”– Lisa J. Brown, Former WA State Department of Commerce Director
