It’s an exciting time to have access to the internet – (mostly) unfettered access to the wide, exponentially growing world of generative AI has rapidly changed the landscape of what is possible in industries ranging from healthcare to social impact to sustainability. Significant advances in large language models paired with a radical shift in accessibility has enabled individuals everywhere to unleash their creativity and explore generative AI’s potential with little to zero knowledge of the technology driving it.

Our work at Intentional Futures spans a similar gamut of industry, and in most client engagements AI is bubbling to the forefront of our partners’ minds.

Where does generative AI hold the greatest promise?
Where does it introduce new risks?
How can we accelerate our learning and experimentation?

Concurrent to client work and general knowledge sharing internally, the Digital Strategy & Innovation team recently concluded an organization-wide experiment to document how iFsters are using AI and for what purposes. First impressions are everything, and when an individual is engaged in a job search, that impression is often developed in the first steps of the hiring process.

At Intentional Futures, our small size has allowed us to employ practices in our hiring and onboarding that have set us apart, evidenced by positive feedback from new iFsters.

We often hear that the hiring process was a large reason why new employees choose to join the company, and much of that can be attributed to the philosophy of iF’s long-standing Head of People + Culture, Andy Park-Buffelen. With the better part of a decade spent at iF, Andy is one of the most tenured iFsters. Most employees at the company were hired under his leadership, and the impact his contributions have made are tangible and appreciated within the organization.

Just in the first part of this year Malia has improved our iF website, brought to fruition a dozen thought-pieces / case studies, researched efficiencies for the org, hosted a very well-appreciated Linked In workshop, demoed cool AI tools, ushered iF's first impact report and supported an important World Bank project on sustainability. In order to fight for more equitable systems and structures, we must first shine a light on the disparities at play. Identifying the root causes of inequities is critical and usually requires an in-depth look at systemic forces, power differentials, and implicit biases.

We believe research must be designed to provide the whole picture of a person, and to elevate the real stories and lived experiences of marginalized and minoritized groups whose voices are too often minimized and tokenized.

In 2022, 48% of our projects were directly tied to improving environmental, social, and economic outcomes, and 33% of our projects were directly tied to improving outcomes for minoritized groups.
