Here is what I wish Artists, agencies, managers and labels looking for talent knew about social media.
Artist likes and followers do not equal talent. It is one thing that can easily be manipulated if the right amount of money is thrown at it, therefore it should not be the guiding light for an agency to decide to take on a new artist. Their WORK and TALENT should be. It is an investment to work with an artist, not a free ride.
We should care about the creators we promote and their impact on culture. We should also understand that culture is manufactured. You may like a new artist you found but do you ever stop and think WHY you do? Did they become an earworm in your brain from the algorithm pushing their content your way and the follow count they have? Or are they truly talented and moved you?
Have you ever found an incredible artists, so talented, but they have no followers and you think to yourself “how is this possible?” - it happens everyday and we are part of the problem by not engaging with them, the overlords of culture decide they are not worthy of more praise. Sad but true. So how do we break the chain?
