Two more worth knowing. The Fair Credit Reporting Act lets you see your credit reports for free and dispute anything wrong, and the credit bureau generally has 30 days to investigate.

And since May 2025, an FTC rule requires hotels, vacation rentals, and event ticket sellers to show the total price, mandatory fees included, up front. If a resort fee shows up only at checkout, that's worth reporting.

⚖️ Most of these laws only help if you know they exist when the problem shows up.

If someone uses your credit card without permission, federal law caps what you owe at $50, and most card issuers waive even that. If your statement has an error, you have 60 days from the statement date to dispute it in writing.

Your card bill has to arrive at least 21 days before it's due, and with a few exceptions, a card company can't raise the interest rate on a balance you already have.

Refinancing or taking out a home equity loan on the home you live in? You get three business days to cancel, and the lender has to refund the fees.

Robocalls and texts sent without your consent can be worth $500 each under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, or up to $1,500 if the violation was willful. Debt collectors can't call before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m., and a court can award up to $1,000 in extra damages per lawsuit, plus your actual losses.

For insured patients, the No Surprises Act caps emergency care, and some out-of-network care at in-network hospitals, at your in-network cost. Most health plans must cover recommended screenings like colonoscopies starting at 45 for $0, as long as you stay in-network. On Medicare, Part D drug costs are capped at $2,100 out of pocket in 2026, and insulin is capped at $35 a month.

If an airline cancels your flight or delays a domestic one by three hours or more and you don't accept the rebooking, you're owed a cash refund, not a voucher. Parts of that rule are under review in 2026, but the core of it is still in place.

Most of these work best when you put the dispute in writing and keep copies. If a company won't fix it, the CFPB, FTC, and Department of Transportation all take complaints.
