Today’s earthquake in New Jersey is a reminder that even buildings on the East Coast need to prepare for seismic activity. Earthquakes happen where they’re not expected. And regions considered a low seismic risk can be especially vulnerable because so few in these areas understand how to respond appropriately (including, apparently, leading public officials in New York City, who after this morning’s tremblor advised residents to drop the floor and cover their heads or stand in a doorway, neither of which would be considered a best practice, let alone prudent.)
