šŸŽŠ Desert Bus for Hope starts tomorrow! šŸŽŠ Every year they livestream for about a week, raising money for Child's Play charity, which provides toys, games, and other positive experiences for young hospital patients. This year I reached deep into my nerd bag and made for the craftalong The Game of Hope: Hades 2 edition, which is up for auction starting at 12 pm Pacific time on Tuesday the 27th!

The Game of Hope was a 36-card deck printed in the early 1800s (the British Museum has a copy you can check out on their online archive!), which aside from card games, could also be laid out as a board game of a simple chutes & ladders type. (If you're also a huge nerd: it's nearly identical to the Game of Goose.) Roll dice to race from step 1 to step 35, various obstacles & rewards of chance, that's it, that's the game. Hades 2 is a video game where you repeatedly attempt to get either down to Hades' Palace in Tartarus, or up to the top of Mount Olympus—and I thought, well, that makes the rotational nature of card designs pretty useful, doesn't it?

When you lay out this version of the Game of Hope, both paths of Hades are illustrated, and which path reads as upright to each player is just about which side of the table they're on. With 1 at your bottom right, features of the surface are upright and you move up to Olympus; with 1 at your top left the underworld is upright and you move down to Tartarus. I made one player token for each of Hades' Keepsakes (they don't give you any game benefits, they're just cute), and a bunch of fake Chronos tokens to use instead of real money because a bunch of punishment squares make you fork up for the winner's pot. (All these old games were just gambling, time is a flat circle, etc.) Extremely fun to play around with Hades' impeccable design work, and once I beat my own head into shape about a style, I really enjoyed doing this black-figure pottery inspired stuff.

a bunch of process recordings are in a highlight! all the black elements are a solvent transfer from toner prints, and then the series of split fountains went on top. ranks handset in Libra. outer box printed with chicory and Jupiter's Beard.

Got to do this beautiful poem a few weeks ago! A poem written by the builder of the cabin in question I believe. I swapped out a broken letter or two that threatened readability and asked the customer about a couple smaller nicks and fading serifs—the Goudy cases are some of the oldest and most well-used fonts we have—but most of those evidences of wear stayed. Seemed appropriate for the subject.

Part two of WIP for the broadside I did this year for & Words of Courage program!

Masking out the spots was the only part I was almost certain was going to work so I did it last šŸ˜† I hope I have succeeded in making a panther that matches the poem: fearless, cool, tangible but not tame.

So yes some anxiety that plans would fall through, that I would have to salvage something out of a mistake, but of course what would help is confidence in envisioning the results, which only comes with practice. Must do it first to learn it, nerves included. Can’t always be panthers.

Part one of WIP for the broadside I did this year for & Words of Courage program!

I was immediately enamored with this poem and very excited to work with it but also nervous because my idea for what to do involved some things I wasn’t positive would work. I planned it so that I could probably ripcord out and fall back on a linocut or something at basically any stage but I crossed my fingers and tested and retested and it all worked out without needing to use plans B through G. Got the low-light nighttime effect i was looking for.

It went through the flatbed a couple times for tone plates and pressure print to build up the gray values. Handling the sheets for this was so much messier than I’m used to, there’s all sorts of set off on the backs of these sheets that I wouldn’t usually tolerate šŸ˜† There was a period where I thought the backdrop wasn’t getting dark enough and I’d have to confine the panther to half the sheet, print the poem white on black—but several people, especially a printer friend, said no it’s working!! Don’t be a coward now!! I’m glad I listened, I think it’s right to flood the whole sheet to make the panther seem unconfined, like it could really approach you.
