Ever since I first acquired my beloved Canon Rebel T1i back in August 2010, I started toying with the idea of a name for my non-existent photography business--just for kicks and giggles. And then there's the ever so popular and generic, "[Insert Your First and Last Name Here] Photography", but I didn't like it for three reasons: (1) everyone else used it, (2) I don't think that "Karen Go Photograp

hy" was all that appealing or fit my style, and (3) I didn't want my name in it. When I think about photography and why I love taking photos, I think about just capturing the beauty God created around me. Whether it be gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, a city skyline, or the love between husband and wife, it's all Him. He's the one that created it all, so why should I be given any credit? In the quest to figure out the perfect trade name, I started thinking about what a photograph is, and tried to think of something to play on the etymology of the word. The word "photograph" comes from the Greek "phos," meaning "light", and "graphe," meaning "drawing." Basically, drawing with light. My nerdy side took over for a bit and then I starting toying with using the idea of "3e8 Photos" since light travels at 3 x 10^8 meters per second. But...I figured that would be super nerdy, which it is. "Impulse Photography" was another idea that stemmed from my nerdiness. Impulse photography with the letter mu as the logo. Impulse...mu... as in an impulse signal? Since a photograph pretty much sampling the world around me at a single moment? I thought it was pretty clever, but then for non-engineers, impulse photography may sound kind of rash and not carefully planned out. So I threw that idea out the window, even though I still really like it. Anyhow! I went back to the concept of light and tried to incorporate my faith into the meaning of the name. Light...the Bible... you are the light of the world... you are the salt of the world... salt and light... Light & Salt! But I chose "Lightly Salted" instead, giving it a more playful and whimsical feeling that fits my personality but still alludes to being the salt and light of the world. I really like it and hope you do, too.
