When enforcement escalates or state violence hits close to home, nonprofit leaders can get caught between fear, urgency, and uncertainty.

You don’t need the perfect response. You do need to reduce harm, protect choice, and communicate care quickly.

Moments like this are heavy. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to begin, starting with a few clear next steps can help you find footing and move forward with care.

Here are practical ways to support your staff when your community is under attack, drawn from what we’ve seen actually help in moments like these.

1. Make safety and flexibility available without requiring an explanation

2. Say out loud that participation is a choice and you're not tracking it

3. Lower Expectations

4. Share one resource without surveillance

5. Don't turn care into performance

6. Put one policy in writing (even if it's temporary)

7. Commit to reflection letter

Five things we’re practicing in 2026.
Not trends. Not buzzwords.
Practices.

1. Service as relationship, not charity - Centering participation, skills-sharing, and contribution as ways communities stay connected and resilient.

2. Capacity-first planning - Letting staffing, energy, and care define scope instead of designing work and hoping capacity catches up.

3. Depth over scale - Choosing fewer, more durable commitments rather than stretching thin to meet rising demand.

4. Community relevance over legacy relevance - Letting present-day needs reshape priorities, even when that means letting go of past models.

5. Care as a core operating practice - Treating rest, reflection, and sustainability as necessary for impact, not optional benefits.

We're thrilled announce that Peggy Allen Jackson has joined the SK team! Please help us welcome her!

"I’m a fundraiser, strategist, and practicing artist with deep roots in the Seattle arts and nonprofit sectors. For more than 20 years, I’ve helped mission-driven organizations build values-aligned, community-centered, sustainable funding. I’m also a painter and studio assistant to Barbara Earl Thomas, and I bring an artist’s sensibility and creative resourcefulness to the work. At my core I’m a “people person” relationship builder; connecting people, ideas, and resources with a sense of care and humor that helps organizations move forward together."
