After 33 years, senior principal Kris Snider is retiring at the end of 2021. Kris was HEWITT's first landscape architect, and under his leadership the landscape architecture studio grew to one of the largest and most respected practices in Seattle. His work has spanned typologies including projects such as Bell Street Park, Arbor Blocks, Via6, University Village, and Tukwila Station.

As senior principal and director of design – landscape architecture, Kris coached us through our challenges and celebrated our successes. We will miss working alongside him but know that we have been set up to continue his legacy well. We wish Kris a happy retirement – and can't wait to see what he gets up to next!

Our team is passionate about transit, and we had a blast visiting Northgate and Roosevelt Stations as construction was wrapping up. Thank you to Sound Transit for giving us the opportunity to be the Station Architect on these incredible projects! It has been a privilege to work with so many incredible professionals and community members for the past 10+ years and we are beyond excited to see two of our stations open to the public on October 2nd!

Some might shy away when rain is back in the forecast, but we say "show us the stormwater!" Rain events allow us to see green stormwater infrastructure in action, like these bioretention cells at 8th & Republican and Batik.

Q: What’s your area of interest of research?

A: Climate-responsive architecture and sustainability in urban design.

Q: What is your educational background?

A: Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech.

Q: What’s your favorite place to travel?

A: I love the Scandinavian countries and my favorite city there is Stockholm. I plan on visiting Iceland in the near future!

Q: What are you currently reading?

A: The Great Indoors by Emily Anthes and Atomic Habits by James Clear

Q: How do you spend your free time?

A: Crossfit, taking care of my plants, and doing volunteer construction builds or meal packing to feed the less fortunate. Oh! I have a “must watch films” list and I try to go through it in my free time.

Bonus: Tell us a little about your thesis “Kitchen Space” you did while at the Virginia Tech.

My thesis proposed that there is sublimity in the mundane. I designed housing for migrant workers, on a small organic farm near Blacksburg, VA, to understand how the use of form could promote a dialogue with natural elements to create a profound space beyond the act of building.
