In the spirit of Halloween, it's a fitting time to explore a different kind of fear - the “fear of loss” as it applies to Adaptive Leadership.

With systemic change, certain behaviors will no longer be needed or helpful for progress. Leaders, and those experiencing change, will have to confront the fear of losing elements they’ve grown comfortable with:

Identity/Status: Change can challenge one's sense of self. Leaders might fear losing the identity associated with their current roles and responsibilities.

Competence: The fear of losing competence or expertise is real. Embracing change requires learning and adapting, even if it means letting go of old skills.

Stability: Change can disrupt the stability that people rely on. Leaders may fear losing the predictability of their current circumstances.

Relationships: Altering systems can lead to the loss of close working relationships.

Beliefs and Values: Sometimes, systemic change challenges deeply-held beliefs and values, causing leaders to fear losing what they stand for.

Emotional Well-being: Change can lead to stress and anxiety. Leaders may fear the emotional toll that change can take.

This Halloween, as we celebrate the unknown and the mysterious, let's also appreciate the courage it takes to confront the fear of loss and embrace change.

Resistance happens when the sense of loss is greater than the sense of purpose.

Resistance is often rooted in the fear of losing something valuable - a familiar routine, a sense of control, established relationships, competence etc. When people anticipate losing something they value, they are more likely to resist change.

To overcome resistance and facilitate change, leaders must make the sense of purpose or the benefits of change more compelling than the perceived losses. This involves effectively communicating the vision for change, emphasizing the positive outcomes, and addressing concerns or fears that people may have.

Adaptive leadership recognizes that navigating change is not just about implementing technical solutions but also about managing the adaptive challenges that come with it. Leaders must acknowledge and address the emotional aspects of change, including the sense of loss, to help individuals and organizations transition successfully.

Today, CLA President Max Martina gave a keynote address at an event hosted by Legacy Group Capital. More than 50 builders, construction managers, and Legacy Group employees gathered to hear Max speak about practicing leadership amid change.

Key concepts covered included distinguishing between leadership and authority, the benefits of 'staying in the game', and the leadership behaviors needed for navigating change.

We appreciate the opportunity to be involved in this event. For more information on our keynote offerings, email us at [email protected]

Leadership and organizational life is no different than biology – Adaptability and an agile responsiveness to change are the keys to survival and growth.

Employees are the greatest investment - and biggest expense - an organization has. Dedicating time and resources to the personal growth of employees should be a top priority for organizations, however, only 5% of companies have actually made an investment into any sort of leadership development. While personal development programs are often seen as an added expense, research has demonstrated that investing in a leadership development program has tangible benefits - including lower burn-out rates, increased productivity, and a higher ROI.

Here are five reasons why your organization should invest in a leadership development program:

Leadership is a practice, not a position. To engage in leadership is to engage in behavior-based, others-focused activities to make change happen. It's observable, learnable, and most importantly, actionable.

Our mission at CLA is to help individuals succeed in their leadership practice by providing an actionable roadmap that we know works. We created Make The Shift - Your Career Depends after witnessing thousands of clients transform their leadership with The Shift framework.
