🔥 Hands-on learning at KCFD20! 🚒

Last night, KCFD20 hosted our monthly West Hill Emergency Readiness Training (WHERT) class, featuring Fireground Demonstration & Safety.

Fire Chief Eric Hicks, PIO Eric Autry, and Lieutenant Matt Bartlett kicked off the evening in the classroom, covering different types of fires, fire alarms, common fire service terminology, and what community members can expect firefighters to do when responding to a fire.

Then, we took the learning outside! 🚒 🔥

Our crews came out in full force to simulate a fire response and give participants an up-close look at how firefighters operate on the fireground. To wrap up the evening, community members even got a chance to get hands-on and spray a fire hose — a little taste of what it’s like to be a firefighter! 💦 👩‍🚒 👨‍🚒

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and to our crews for making the evening both educational and fun!

📅 Join us for our next WHERT class on Tuesday, November 3, for Fire Extinguisher Safety!

We hope to see you there!

🔥 KCFD 20 Proposition No. 1: November 3, 2026 Ballot

On November 3, voters in King County Fire District 20 will consider Proposition No. 1—Bonds to Improve Fire and Emergency Response Facilities.

As part of its long-term planning, the District has evaluated its fire station, emergency-response facilities, infrastructure, storage, site security, and apparatus needs.

If approved, Proposition No. 1 would authorize the District to issue up to $16 million in general obligation bonds, payable over a period of up to 20 years.

The bond would fund capital improvements such as:

• Constructing and equipping a new storage and support facility

• Providing secure storage for emergency equipment, reserve apparatus, and operational supplies

• Renovating and modernizing the existing fire station, including firefighter work and living spaces

• Improving site security, parking, storage, and emergency-power infrastructure

• Replacing or redeveloping aging support structures

• Acquiring firefighting and emergency-response apparatus

The bond is currently estimated to cost approximately $0.28 per $1,000 of assessed property value. For a property assessed at $700,000, the estimated cost would be approximately $16.33 per month, or $196 per year.

Actual costs may vary depending on assessed values, interest rates, market conditions, and the final bond structure.

Bond proceeds would be used for capital projects and would not fund the District’s regular day-to-day operating expenses.

Skyway Fire and Renton Regional Fire Authority firefighters responded to a fire in the 13500 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way South.

The fire involved a structure and brush along the side of MLK Way. Access to the fire was challenging due to the location, and Martin Luther King Jr. Way South was temporarily closed in both directions while firefighters worked at the scene.

The King County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control during the incident.

The fire was brought under control, and Martin Luther King Jr. Way South has reopened to traffic.

The cause of the fire is currently undetermined.

Today marks 25 years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a day that forever changed the United States.

We remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in New York City, at the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93. Among those killed were 343 FDNY firefighters who responded to the World Trade Center, along with law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military personnel, and people simply going about their lives that morning.

We remember the courage shown by first responders and ordinary people who stepped forward to help others. We remember the survivors, the families who lost loved ones, and the thousands of responders and recovery workers whose lives were forever affected by their service in the days, months, and years that followed.

A quarter century has passed, but September 11 remains part of our shared history and continues to shape our nation.

Today, we pause to remember those we lost, honor those who served, and reflect on the sacrifices made that day and in the years that followed.

We will never forget.

School is back in session, which means more kids are walking, biking, and waiting for buses throughout our neighborhoods.
Please give yourself a little extra time and stay alert, especially during the morning and afternoon school commute. Slow down in school zones, watch carefully at crosswalks and intersections, and be prepared for children to enter the roadway unexpectedly.
A few extra seconds of patience behind the wheel can make a big difference.
Please help us keep our kids safe as they head back to school.

At 10:42 p.m., multiple 911 calls were received reporting a house fire in the 12000 block of Renton Avenue S.

At 10:47 p.m., the first engine, aid car, and rehab unit arrived from the Skyway Fire station and found heavy fire on the first floor and rear exterior of a two-story home with a basement.

Skyway Fire crews were joined by firefighters from Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority and Renton Regional Fire Authority, along with King County Medic One. Firefighters made a quick knockdown of the fire while crews searched the home. The fire was extinguished at 11:17 p.m.

All three residents were able to get out of the home before firefighters arrived. Dogs in the backyard were also secured safely away from the fire. One resident was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The King County Sheriff’s Office provided traffic control and closed Renton Avenue S for approximately two hours during the response. Puget Sound Energy and Seattle City Light responded to secure utilities.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

King County fire investigators are investigating the cause of the fire.
